Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrowโs budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me ๐Weโre just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. Itโs been a roaring success. For every โฌ1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got โฌ1.46 back. Canโt argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."
Damn. This is amazing. ยฃ325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

This is so valuable! Not just bc traditional reports are nowhere near this detailed, but bc hearing what a judge finds credible and not is illuminating (and reassuring in this case)

Sometimes people use "respect" to mean "treating someone like a person" and sometimes they use "respect" to mean "treating someone like an authority"
and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say "if you won't respect me, I won't respect you" and they mean "if you won't treat me like an authority I won't treat you like a person"
and they think they're being fair but they aren't, and it's not okay.

This is so well put I am stunned
The double standard is designed to be invisible to those who benefit from it.

Cover of the book Five Manifestos for the Beautiful World, edited by Christina Sharpe
A slide with a quote from Christina Sharpe's intro to Five Manifestos for the Beautiful World: "gathering, speaking, dreaming, and writing are each powerful actions in the face of structural violence, genocide, and repression"
This term our migration students are writing manifestos for migratory futures, so we're reading Five Manifestos for the Beautiful World for inspiration

If the immigration enforcement apparatus of the United States were its own national military, it would be the 13th most heavily funded in the world. This puts it higher than the national militaries of Poland, Italy, Australia, Canada, Turkey and Spainโโโand just below Israel.
US immigration enforcement is now the 13th most well-funded military in the world, ahead of Canada and, incredibly, just behind Israel.

Sounds like Republicans ought to get all the Republicans who form the Republican majorities in the Republican-led House and the Republican-led Senate together to pass the budget that Republicans wrote with the Republican White House and that Republicans now insist absolutely must be passed.

Authoritarian governments sending troops drawn from the ordinary population to repress said population and then *not paying* those troops is definitely a thing that has gone well, historically. A+ dictator performance Donny

Kaepernick-Funded Autopsy Reportedly Finds Trey Reed Didnโt Die by Suicide โ Family Attorney Ben Crump Hasnโt Confirmed
According to a source who isn't authorized to comment publicly, the autopsy of Trey Reed reveals that his death was not caused by a suicide.
Trey Reed, a student at Delta State University in Mississippi, was found hanging from a noose. Mississippi police ruled the death a suicide. Now an autopsy reportedly concludes that he suffered extensive blunt force trauma across his body before he died, meaning he was beaten before he was lynched.

If you are just catching up, after CBP shot a woman, angry community members showed up to protest the agents who have been terrorizing their community for weeks.
It ended with more chemical munitions, arrests, and CBP recklessly speeding off through a cloud of tear gas.
