I don’t check bluesky that often so I’m feeling really blessed that I popped in the same day that someone respectfully asked Courtney Milan if she was a lawyer

This book is an extremely good time and you should read it

Basically that box is the erotica box and checking it will get a book treated like erotica, even if it isn’t.

Also, if they want to start censoring books for having sex scenes, I’m gonna make them work for it at least a little bit.

But everything else - basically everything with an HEA ending - I didn’t check the box, because ime checking the box gets a book blocked from all library platforms and put in the “adult” section of others (like kobo), and that’s just not where small town romcoms should be.

I went to check my D2D and realized I lied and do have some stuff that I checked the box on. Basically anything that’s irrefutably erotica (under 10k words, like 80% explicit, not necessarily an HEA) I checked it, I think because there’s not really an argument that it’s romance?

tbh I’m of the opinion that people who write erotic content shouldn’t check it anywhere, but that’s probably a whole other discussion

And checking that box on Amazon actually does the same thing - they put the book into erotica categories, they just do it without asking you.

Ah. Whenever I’ve checked that box in the past (never again!) it’s always created a huge headache with them blocking various distribution channels and whatnot - does that not happen any more?

Hi! This has happened to me in the past and it was relatively easy (if annoying) to get it fixed, if you’re looking for advice?

(Tip number one is that usually those “adult content” checkboxes really mean “visual adult content,” but that guideline is very hard to find)

i keep seeing authors who are all-in on KU complaining that boycotting amazon means it will mostly hurt small creators

and i'm like. idk. obviously aligning onesself exclusively with Amazon puts one in a position to defend Amazon's dominance, and that's not ACTUALLY good for small creators.

Today the DOE announced plans to dismiss 11 outstanding complaints against book bans, and to eliminate the position of Book Ban Coordinator at the Office of Civil Rights (OCR). This distortion of the intended work of the OCR--the protection of civil rights and students' freedoms in our nation's schools--is negligent, grossly un-American, and in direct conflict with freedom of speech, a bedrock right enshrined in the Constitution. Authors Against Book Bans unequivocally stands against all such attempts at censorship and discrimination. We stand with families, students and educators across the country who exercise free speech every time they open a book, and with the 71% of Americans who are opposed to book bans.
