OMG - yes!

Someone brought up the demise of RWA the other day in relation to current published romance - and I think I agree. For all of it's faults (legions of them), RWA was a place to go for writers to learn and hone craft. Now it feels very toss in a couple tropes and shoot for "feels."

I see 400+ pages in a contemporary and I just know I'm in for endless repetition of the same 2 points ad nauseam and/or characters who end up morphing into pod people to draw out weak conflict.

And I love a good historical saga. Look, I have ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS with The Thorn Birds, but that book had the saga aspect of the story down cold. Same with some of the better executed bodice rippers back in the day.

I'm not saying you can't have sagas in contemporary settings - you most definitely can - but it really only works in those glossy, glitzy, trashy beach reads of old. But in romance? As we define the genre now? No.

Small at least gave Skye O'Malley multiple books.

Running errands, and just saw a copy of Just for the Cameras by Meghan Quinn. It's 581 pages. Y'all we used to be a proper genre. Only way that works is if she takes 4 lovers, sails to 3 continents and there better be a pirate involved in some way.

Yes, because the mystery genre basically "owns" that perceived definition of cozy. My experience is that many genre readers read across multiple genres so they know the conventions of cozy mysteries.
