I don't think he's doing this just for kicks. I think he has two reasons: to show his base he's doing something (they seem to love violent action) and to soften us up for extrajudicial killings of folks he doesn't like on US soil.

The murders in the Caribbean, the invasions of American cities, the incarcerations, the destruction of the People's House - Trump is not behaving like a president. He's behaving like a conqueror.

This is a really interesting discussion. I think you have to include religion, though. Some of his voters aren't overtly racist (they're just willing to tolerate racism, as if that's any better). They're evangelical & they thought Trump would advance their religious aspirations for the country.

Today at the No Kings rally here, an older, white man asked me to take a picture of him holding his sign. He told me his grandson is 6 and the photo was for him. "In 6 to 10 years," he said, "I won't be here and I want him to know I was part of this."
