These weeks, these nights, this uprising…this is our love story. I remember thinking, as most revolutionary love stories go, this one probably won’t last forever, and chances are it won’t end well. So we should probably make the most of it. For Alexis. And for us."

But here, separated by not much more than a metal gate, we ate food liberated through our collective action, in a free space we had occupied, while chatting amongst friends and comrades.

Outside were still all the reminders of the explosion of our rage, down to the still smoldering barricades & the hordes of guardians of the state who stood probably not 100 meters away.

Love for our comrades, for our struggle, for our ideas. Maybe others saw here only violence & destruction. Fire & barricades. But love & rage, they aren’t opposite points far from each other, they exist next to each other, 2 sides of a thin line.

I can’t help thinking that this is, in a way, a love story. Love isn’t just monogamy. It doesn’t exist solely in the traditional relationship or the nuclear family unit. Love was right here. This was love.

Alexis was all of us, & we were all Alexis. We will take the experiences & the memories of this insurrection with us forever. & with us, a whole new generation of anarchists, some who may have participated for the first time in their lives, & others who like me in 1995,

Only none of us had paid for it with our lives. & nothing we could do could ever bring him back. So here we were, doing what we could to avenge him with all our pent up rage, & making his & our collective dreams a reality.

It wasn’t just some slogan. We had all been Alexis.

A kid who each one of us had been when we were younger. Who among us didn’t see a cop car drive by and yell something at them in our teenage years? It was the formless, unmitigated act of rebellion of a young anarchist and his instinctive anti-authoritarianism.
