Wanna learn how to explore your genomic data to know how related your samples and populations are to each other? Come and join us and @jolijnerven.bsky.social on our next #AaRCademy workshop! April 16h at 14:00 CET!
Our paper "Old goats: 3,000 years of genetic connectivity of the domestic goat in Ireland", is now online at the Journal of Archaeological Science! #aDNA
Our work on ancient Irish goat was covered in the Irish Times.

Another #aDNA preprint! We recovered DNA from 7,000 year old (!) goat leather from Cueva de los Murciélagos - and see a genetic link with Bermeya goats today!
Credit to Francisco Martínez-Sevilla for seeing me on Youtube(?!) + reaching out to collaborate - there's still value in the internet.
Our paper in the PNAS Special Feature on 🐕 is out!
We demonstrated the accuracy of imputing ancient canid genomes, looked at inbreeding levels over the past 10,000 years and found genomic regions resistant to ROH which were enriched for immunity and chemosensory genes.

I'll be presenting at @qubelfastofficial.bsky.social at the School of Biological Sciences, 2nd December, 1pm - please come along to hear about #aDNA, domestication, and disease!
Become our colleague! - 2yr Postdoctoral position in Palaeo-population genomics at the Center for the Human Past (UU) @humanpastcenter.bsky.social 🧪
Great place to work at (ok, I am biased), integration with archaeologists and linguists + pretty flexible research topic

Inferring domestic goat demographic history through ancient genome imputation https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.04.18.649576v1
Our results demonstrate that genotype imputation is a valuable tool for maximizing information from low-coverage goat palaeogenomes.
This approach offers new opportunities to investigate the genetic impacts of early domestication and herd dispersal—directions we will be continuing to explore!
Identity-by-descent (IBD) patterns mirrored our ROH findings: Goats from early herding sites like Ganj Dareh exhibited less relatedness compared to goats from later in the dispersal process.

📊 Insights into early goat domestication:
Analyzing 36 previously published ancient goat genomes, we observed that runs-of-homozygosity (ROH) increased with distance from the Zagros Mountains during the Neolithic, suggesting effects from the initial dispersal of managed herds.

By imputing ancient downsampled genomes utilizing the VarGoats dataset (www.goatgenome.org/vargoats.html), we achieved high concordance at 0.5× coverage for common variants.
🐐 New preprint out with @gingerhowley.bsky.social The VarGoats Consortium and many others!
We explore how genotype imputation can enhance low-coverage ancient goat/Capra🐐 genomes, shedding light on early domestication and herd management.

We found that during the Neolithic, pig management in Europe was highly variable. By integrating paleogenomics and zooarchaeology, we uncovered a commensal relationship between humans, pigs and wild boar at the Early Neolithic settlement of Swifterbant
