One of the things I enjoy most is moments where I, as a queer person, can find comfort in my queer community. Fire Island is one such moment. It’s a gay refuge, with beauty beyond description. It’s a place I can walk hand and hand with my husband @nclarkspear and no one bats an eye. Just pure acceptance. It’s a place where as a gay man, I feel like I can truly be myself, and let down all the unconscious self defenses I protect myself with as I move through a world that is often unkind to queer people. When I first went to Fire Island, it felt a little daunting. I had heard tales of how it was a place where on some level, your body could only look one way if you wanted to belong. What I found in reality was a vibrant community that celebrates so much of the diversity that makes the queer community strong. In this GUS piece, I wanted to capture the feeling of pure relaxation. GUS totally at peace, in the Pines, lying by the pool and listening to a good dance track echoing into the distance, layered with the gentle murmur of warm conversation. Total serenity.

I just read a book called “let this radicalize you” by Kelly hayes and it was really interesting and a lot of it was about community organizers in Chicago. I have a pdf of it if you’re interested. I also just read the will to change by bell hooks and would recommend that one too!
