In 2023, the LALY judges were proud to name them and their Leigh Day colleagues winners of our Outstanding Achievement award for their work on this case.
5/ Writing in @legalactiongroup.bsky.social, the Russell's solicitors point out that many hurdles they faced will be familiar to *all* legal aid lawyers: a battle to get funding; late & incomplete disclosure (causing additional work, cost & delay); inequality of arms; an obstructive opponent.
4/Molly Vs THE MACHINES recreates scenes from the 2-week inquest - which the Barnet coroner compelled Meta execs to attend to be cross-examined in person. The film doesn't (understandably) show how hard these execs fought (unsuccessfully) to give their evidence remotely from Silicon Valley.
3/ For social justice lawyers the film highlights something else as well. It shows how #LegalAid can level the playing field, even against the biggest, most powerful and entitled corporations on the planet. It was legal aid that allowed a grieving family to hold these tech giants to account
