During my lunch hour today, I dropped by the local Terry Fox Foundation office.

Tens of thousands defy Hungary’s ban on Pride in protest against Orbán Crackdown on Pride is part of effort to curb democratic freedoms ahead of a hotly-contested election next year Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of Budapest in defiance of the Hungarian government’s ban on Pride, heeding a call by the city’s mayor to “come calmly and boldly to stand together for freedom, dignity and equal rights”. Jubilant crowds packed into the city’s streets on Saturday, waving Pride flags and signs that mocked the country’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, as their peaceful procession inched forward at a snail’s pace. Velshi Banned Book Club: “Pride Puppy!” by Robin Stevenson “Pride Puppy!” by Robin Stevenson is a rhyming alphabet book. With brightly colored illustrations, it tells the story of a puppy that gets lost during a Pride parade. “Pride Puppy!”, despite its cute premise and beautiful pictures, is at the center of a Supreme Court case happening right now. A small group of Maryland parents have sued over exposing their children to LGBTQ+ inclusive books like “Pride Puppy!” at their public school. As outlandish as it may seem to center a children’s book in such a high profile, so much is on the line for authors, for access to literature, and for families like the ones portrayed at Pride in this children’s book.

Talk about L is for LEAP. How “Pride Puppy!” - a children’s alphabet book - came to the center of a SCOTUS case w/ high stakes for access to books & education, involves "a pretty disturbing interpretation," says @robinstevenson.bsky.social. The "backlash is such evidence of need for these books."

‘One of the most heartbreaking tragedies’: Gaza doctor’s last goodbye before nine children killed in airstrike Dr Alaa al-Najjar was at work when Israeli strike destroyed her home, leaving one son and her husband as survivors In the early hours of Friday, as she did every day, Dr Alaa al-Najjar said goodbye to her 10 children before leaving the house. The youngest, Sayden, six months old, was still sleeping. And like every day, with war raging in Gaza and Israeli strikes landing just metres from her neighbourhood in Khan Younis, Najjar worried about leaving them at home without her. But Najjar, 35, had little choice. One of Gaza’s dwindling number of medics, a respected paediatrician at the Nasser medical complex, she had to go to work to care for injured babies who had barely survived Israeli attacks. She could never have imagined that that farewell to her family would be her last. Continue reading...

Far-Right AfD Is Labeled Extremist by Germany’s Intelligence Agency The designation is certain to inflame debates over whether the party should be banned, though some polls show it to be the most popular in the country.

Breaking News: Germany classified the right-wing Alternative for Germany party as an extremist group, giving intelligence officials more tools to monitor it.

As I get ready to vote, I found it disappointing that only two (Conservative and Animal Protection Party) of the five candidates running in my district have email addresses where I can reach out to ask about their positions on topics important to me. I have reached out to those two.
