I’ve been busy lately creating a brand new pharmacy learning tool called Phluent! Users can practice spelling and pronouncing drugs, as well as learning MOA, indications, side effects, and dosing. Check it out - it’s free!

The first prototype for my RxDecks playing cards/pharmacology study tool just arrived! I’m so proud of how they turned out! I’m hoping to have all 6 decks (312 drugs) ready to go by October. They’ve been an idea in my head for over a year, and I’m so excited to see the finished product!

I spent an entire hour the other day in clinic discussing, making med adjustments, and educating a patient with some complicated chronic diseases. It was a great conversation, and the patient left feeling confident with the new plan. But I recognize that time is a luxury in most settings. #PharmSky

Ever wonder why you crave crunching on ice? It could be an iron deficiency. Increase your dietary iron or consider a supplement. (Image credit: www.drugs.com)

I was gonna say that too, but but I ran out of room! 😁 Many of our patients are on metformin ER 500 mg 2 tabs BID because insurance won’t cover the 1000 mg tabs.

Medication only works if it actually makes it into your body. I’ve had patients tell me they were allergic to metformin and couldn’t take it because it gave them diarrhea. #PatientEducation #Diabetes

Pharmacy Pearl of the Day (PPotD): Even if your patient needs 2000 mg a day of metformin, don’t start there. Do 500 mg HS x 1 week, then 500 mg BID. Then 500 mg QAM + 1000 mg HS, then 1000 mg BID. Let their gut adjust, because if the GI effects are too much, they’re not gonna take it. #PharmSky

A giant erupting volcano. An enormous turkey the size of a mountain is emerging from the center. The turkey is holding a fire extinguisher in one wing and a turkey fryer pot in the other. The text reads: The Thanksgiving volcano! Nobody likes The Thanksgiving Volcano. Fry your turkey safely. Follow the directions for your fryer. Only fry a turkey outside and away from your home or other flammable materials. Never use turkey fryers in an enclosed area like the garage or porch. Stand by your turkey!

Pharmacy Pearl of the Day (PPotD): Adding bupropion to an SSRI (escitalopram, sertraline, etc.) may help counteract the sexual side effects and weight gain SSRIs can cause. #PharmSky

Taking it daily increases your body’s production of hepcidin, which blocks iron absorption. So ever other day dosing gives you the most effectiveness (and fewer GI side effects as an added bonus)

Taking it daily is fine, it’s just that you get more bang for your buck with every other day. 😊

Pharmacy pearl of the day (#PPotD):
If you’re taking iron supplements, you’ll get best results if you take it every other day. Even better if you wash it down with orange juice. (The vitamin C helps your body absorb the iron.)

So technically rifamycins (like rifampin) are proven to affect OCs, but anecdotally, there are case reports (and a couple of friend instances) of OC failure with ABX. In the current political climate, I’d want to be extra careful just in case 😬

Great question! Right now it depends on what state you’re in. We can bill incident to in some places, and can act as an agent for MD billing for annual wellness, transition of care, and chronic care management. If only we could get CMS on board…

Just my opinion, but if you included a clinical pharmacist to manage chronic medication management (and deal with pharmacy communication and patient med access), it would be a step in the right direction. We’re qualified and ready to help.

Absolutely! These are all things I get tasked with, so it’s great that other prescribers will see this. But I’d love to connect these authors with some independent pharmacy owners to talk about what all they can offer.
