One of the saddest days in my life was shortly after my marriage ended, binging ‘Cheers’, watching the last episode as all the characters leave the scene one by one. “Sorry. Bar’s closed” still gets me.

Churches pay 60-70% of their donations to their professional staff, which are often overworked and underpaid. Staff pay State, City and County taxes on every dollar. So, there’s that.
Churches in California - although 501 non-profits- are not tax exempt and pay enormous amounts of money in State taxes. And, the feds took away most donor’s ability to claim donations on their personal taxes a few years ago, reducing incentive. So, there’s that.
