Chapter 4 The Animal Agriculture Industry’s Role in Obstructing Climate Action Kathrin Lauber, Viveca Morris, Jennifer Jacquet, Peter Li, Ina Möller, Silvia Secchi, Alex Wijeratna, Melina De Bona Abstract The greenhouse gas emissions of the global food system are on course to push global warming beyond 1.5°C above preindustrial levels, with meat and dairy production predicted to be responsible for most food-related warming between 2023 and 2100. However, compared with other industries, agribusinesses have only recently begun to emerge as a target of public, scholarly, and regulatory scrutiny for their climate impacts. This chapter shows that actors profiting from animal agribusiness have been involved in climate obstruction since at least the 1990s, with evidence suggesting that their efforts expanded following the 2006 publication of the first major report on the climate impacts of livestock and accelerated dramatically in the decades that followed. The chapter identifies key actors, objectives, practices, and narratives that contribute to obstructing and delaying climate action as it relates to animal agriculture.

Abstract Climate obstruction involves intentional actions and efforts to slow or block policies on climate change that are commensurate with the current scientific consensus of what is necessary to avoid dangerous human interference with the climate system. With thirty-one lead authors coordinating twelve teams of more than one hundred total authors, this first-of-its-kind volume reviews obstruction efforts undertaken by fossil fuel industries, utilities, the transportation sector, agribusinesses, public relations firms, and organizations on the political far right. The chapters also examine the role and effects of the media in disseminating climate disinformation and misinformation. They assess climate obstruction efforts at the subnational level, in United Nations negotiations, across the Global South, and those aimed at adaptation. Finally, the reviews explore efforts to curb climate obstruction, including regulation and litigation as well as civil-society movements. This assessment shows that as climate action becomes globalized, efforts to obstruct it have become more deceptive, widespread, well-funded, and dangerous.

Wel moet gezegd worden dat Nederland te weinig doet om wolven schuw te houden.
Roedels krijgen onvoldoende eigen ruimte, mensen proberen de dieren te benaderen of zelfs te lokken, en pro-actief ingrijpen wordt bij de rechtbank bestreden.
Zo creeër je problemen die uiteindelijk in afschot uitmonden.
Internationale wolvenexperts zijn het erover eens dat wolven hun angst voor mensen moeten houden. En dat een wolf die mensen aanvalt moet worden uitgeschakeld. Voor de veiligheid en óók omdat een ongeluk de Europese wolvenpopulatie in gevaar kan brengen.
