in the face of grief.

I'll never imprison myself
in stoicism
again.

I will grieve,
and it will not be quiet.

Cover your ears if you must.

I will not swallow my cries for you.

Cologne and cigarettes. Whiskey.

Don't you dare lean in and kiss me
I know where that smell leads -

me, on a metal slab, suffering

my God,
there's nothing beyond that.

You know I share a birthday with Buddha?

It seems un-Buddha like to brag about that.

But what is Buddha-like?

I don't know.
Probably not me.

I don't control my birthday.

I just want to relate to
some face of God.

So I am a little proud of it.

Christened in cold water

Midlife is tender, like
meat falling off the bone.

It leaves no trace, it's
delectable, delight -

rich with the aroma of
time. Not even the

strength and speed of
a young body or the

teeming curiosity of a
new mind is as mouth-

life starts giving back.
