Any centrally owned "social media", whether it's YouTube, Facebook, Twitter/X, and now bsky, will inevitably find that the CEO starts treating the platform as their personal play thing and you're just there to make them money. Nobody owns Mastodon. Yes it's more work but boy is it worth it.

The problem with a single organisation controlling an entire platform is that there is no escape when its CEO goes insane. This was clearly illustrated when Twitter became X and if you're clinging on to the hope that this won't happen here, you're a fool.

As a "tit for tat" I suggest we respond to the Gulf of Mexico nonsense by referring to the subjects of the USA as "US Inmates" from here on in. "Americans" are people from any country on the American continent other than the USA, who are inmates, in thrall of their insane POTUS and his regime.

Apparently I needed to explain to Google that the USA has not got the authority to rename the Gulf of Mexico because that body of international waters does not fall within its jurisdiction. What they present to US citizens is their business, but outside the USA they need to play by the rules.

Hello Sheila, The explanation you provided is not acceptable. The USA, its president and all companies that operate there need to understand that the naming of international waters is governed by the UNGEGN (United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names). I understand that Google Maps may show two names when people from outside a jurisdiction navigate to places within jurisdictions where they may have officially recognised local names. For example when somebody from outside Ireland navigates Google Maps to our beautiful island they may see placenames like Dublin (Baile Átha Cliath) because what you'll see between those brackets is the official name by which the Irish Government has labeled its own capital city. Likewise, a Dutchman navigating Google Maps to the UK might see Londen (London) because in the Netherlands we call that city "Londen" with an e while its official name is "London". But in all those cases the countries in question have jurisdiction over the naming of those landmarks and their own Territorial Waters. So the names they give them are theirs to determine. And this is where the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico is different. The Gulf of Mexico consists primarily of international waters, NOT Territorial Waters belonging to the USA. So regardless of what your GNIS decides, it has ZERO authority to change the name of that body of water outside its own jurisdiction. So by all means, call it whatever you please for those poor unfortunates who are stuck in the USA. But when we, the almost 8 billion of us who are NOT beholden to that narcissist navigate to that area through Google Maps, kindly don't insult our intelligence by presenting us with his egomaniacal label of an area of the world that is not his to control. Thank you
