We found resilience by necessity yet so many interconnected challenges for these rural counties in Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia where we deployed a survey & did focus groups. The NOAA funded work brought a diverse group across states and universities together.

Defending Human Rights Is Dangerous. Defending Nature Makes It Even Riskier - Inside Climate News
Over the past decade, there have been more than 6,400 attacks on human rights defenders, with three-fourths carried out against environmental defenders.
Important reminder from @katiesurma.bsky.social that environmental defenders face violence or the threat of, sanctioned & otherwise, so often. Long neglected focus of #environmentalsecurity work. Our IR & conflict studies biases blinded us to these key dynamics. insideclimatenews.org/news/2005202...

One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss
Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.
βOne mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.β
βWhich means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.β

A thrill (and challenge) to keynote Ohio University's Earth Day program. Talked of 2025 losses in personal terms with the Wilson Center & U.S. Global Change Research Program, but spent most of my time on sources of inspiration from students, faculty, staff & community partners near and far.
