South Orange Environmental Commission planted
this rain garden between the Middle School and the River, aimed at capturing polluted runoff from the school parking lot.
A major goal of the project is to involve Middle School students with measuring the stormwater runoff diverted from the river.

The EPA now says wastewater treatment plants need to make more cuts in the amount of oxygen-consuming ammoniaβa component of treated sewageβthey discharge into the river so that more oxygen is available for fish.

Farming creates a large amount of crop waste. Scientists found this agricultural waste can actually boost crop yield and lower pollution β when treated properly. When heated in low-oxygen conditions, this "waste" becomes biochar, a charcoal-like material that provides many soil-enriching benefits.
