Same. Remember this very fondly. Characters were all fantastic, great story, very focused, good mission variety, short, melancholy. Not sure how it could have been better.

FF6 is my favorite, but FF7 has the better battle theme, no doubt. I loved the slow reveal of it in the remake, like the slow reveal of the Bond theme in Casino Royale.

Did you ever read J. Hoberman's The Dream Life, his book about The 60s where he argues that Presidents are film genres? His take on how as a culture we could not create Reagan until we created Dirty Harry, and could not create Dirty Harry until we created Nixon, is pretty incisive stuff.

I remember this as the NES's E.T.

A bit of an unfair comparison, I admit, since Tomorrowland is a film of ambition and First Steps... isn't, but I found it satisfied my 60s retrofuturism fetish in an enjoyably pornographic way for its duration, whereas Tomorrowland I found frustrating by the high standards of Bird's other work.

Sure, The Incredibles is still technically a better Fantastic Four movie, but First Steps is a better Tomorrowland movie, so Brad Bird and Matt Shakman can call it even.

Everything about this movie is believable, especially its sharp awareness of class and its depiction of a relationship imploding over a parking space.

Fantastic story, music, gameplay. I confess I bounced off FFTactics hard back in the day, but absolutely loved this.

"I asked chatgpt" "I asked grok" well I asked SHODAN and she asked me to pant and sweat as I ran through her corridors.

Space Valkyrie bears witness to a dying world. Beautifully melancholic, with incredible anime vibes.

It's like if Studio Ghibli made a Mega Man RPG. It's the single best thing to ever bear the Mega Man name. No other iteration of the franchise comes even remotely close. Storytelling/writing-wise, it's probably the best thing Capcom ever produced outside Phoenix Wright.

My parents were these people. It would be hilarious if it weren't so actively destructive.

This is the best D&D art I've ever seen.

Loved the humor in this. Same writer as Nightshade NES.

To me this is BY FAR the best series to ever bear the Mega Man name. Incredible graphics that have aged like wine, fantastic gameplay, great story and narrative design, shockingly good English voice acting... it's like a Studio Ghibli anime somehow starring Mega Man.

See? Now I want to play it... (I believe this was also the basic approach of Peter Jackson's King Kong remake.)

I was disappointed at the time, but the likeable protagonists and non-linear narrative almost made up for it. Claire and Sherry's Ripley/Newt energy gave the story a stronger emotional through line than any other RE game, which the remake managed to elevate with genuinely good writing and acting.

I prefer a lot of 1.5's direction to 2's, honestly. The less gothic, more urban, more expansive, less linear approach makes it more a proper Dawn of the Dead to RE1's NotLD. This is why the 2Remake is the best RE game for me, since it brought a lot of this back. It's the most "Romero" RE game.

There's nothing wrong with it. It's a masterpiece of 3D puzzle design. I just hate it. I'd rather fish for Triforce pieces in the ocean.

Of course. I'm just disputing the very well-worn position that those cuts constitute flaws. They don't for me, or for a lot of people who feel this is one of the best games in the franchise, which is now a much more common opinion than it once was.

After that torture chamber in Ocarina, I never want to see fucking water temple in any game ever again. You can argue it's well designed. You know what else is? A fucking guillotine. :P

This has always been my experience as well. While not a wrong take, it was presented for years as received wisdom about the game, which always irked me. I find WW to be a fluid, elegant, flexible experience from beginning to end, and I know I'm not alone.

17.07.2025 17:22 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I personally never registered any of those things as negatives, if I even noticed them at all. And whatever pacing issues they may have introduced paled in comparison to what bored me about Ocarina or the absolute obligation Twilight Princess was. Your experience is valid, but hardly universal.

Also, I teach this game in my survival horror class, and students invariably love the bit where Aya knocks her himbo date off the screen. I'm not sure there's a better, more concise moment of characterization in a Squaresoft game.

Was lukewarm on this when it came out, but now (since moving to NYC) I appreciate it as a bananas gender-bent reworking of Cloud and Sephiroth. Their use of the city is inspired at times, like when you fight a boss atop a Central Park carriage being pulled by two flaming horses.
