Three climbers - left to right - Frank McCarthy, Mickey Gutwein, and John Horgan on the summit of Carstensz Pyramid, west Papua.

Temporary escape from the insanity. Summit of Carstensz Pyramid, west Papua, about 48 hours ago. Highest peak in Oceania and one of the fabled Seven Summits. Very technical climbing and lucky to have had great conditions. L-R Frank McCarthy, Mickey Gutwein, me.

Non-US tv news currently has the most measured and informed context from regional experts and seasoned correspondents. BBC, Al Jazeera, France 24, etc.

Hello new followers. I’m John Horgan, a professor of psychology who studies terrorist behavior. Don’t believe anyone who says they know what is going to happen next. Nobody does. Believe the Trump administration least of all. The informed voices are out there. Seek them out.

"To incentivize participation in the task force model, ICE is offering to pay for the annual salary and benefits of each of the local officers designated by police agencies to carry out immigration enforcement tasks, including overtime coverage of up to 25% of officers’ annual salary."

"The task force model had been discontinued for over a decade before being revived under the Trump administration last year. The Obama administration ended those partnerships in 2012, following a Department of Justice investigation that uncovered widespread racial profiling and other discrimination"

Cover of Reinhold Messner’s book, Against The Wind.

An unparalleled mountaineer, for sure, but I’ve seen fewer grievances in terrorist manifestos.

Any time I think I can't possibly be more shocked and floored by the outrageous cruelty so proudly on display by this administration, I am quickly proven wrong.

Sure. I recommend Zlatko Dizdarevic's "Sarajevo: A War Journal". Also Jan Honig's book about the Srebrenica massacre. "The Death of Yugoslavia" (Allan Little) is good background/context to the war. Oh, "Zlata's Diary" too.

The 'sniper tourism' rumors, however, are a different thing entirely. Hopefully we will find out more soon.

In 1999 [TitanicLady.gif], Max Taylor and I wrote about how the sniping of children in Sarajevo was a potential new form of terrorism, pushing the boundaries of what was considered "permissible" in warfare, would likely increase worldwide. Unfortunately, we were correct about that.

Sarajevo sniper tourists ‘killed children by day, then partied at night’ Rich foreigners, including Britons, have been accused of paying to shoot children and pregnant women during the siege of the Bosnian capital in the early 1990s

Been following this for a few years. Hopefully this investigation will produce results one way or another.
