What should have been a serious local meeting became another spectacle of political bullying.
John James did not bring leadership. He brought the same grievance politics and performative chaos that has infected too much of our politics and government.
But according to people at the meeting, the pledge was recited and James was explicitly called to the podium to speak.
The toxic atmosphere was so bad that two highly qualified candidates reportedly dropped out during voting because of the abuse coming from the crowd.
Witnesses say he snarled at board members, “I have a long memory and I won’t soon forget the cowards I see in front of my face tonight,” before leaving and winking at far right supporters on his way out.
Afterward,James posted lies claiming the crowd refused to say the Pledge & that he was silenced.
