On this day, 80 years ago, mere days away from Auschwitz's liberation: "The Soviet Army was now making dramatic progress right across the remainder of occupied Poland ... [On] the 24th January they reached [the] modern day border between Poland and Germany ... only 60 miles from Berlin."
