politics is the new pop culture & politicians are the new influencers. the right began to understand this in the late 2010’s, it’s why they advanced so rapidly post-covid. we need to start understanding it NOW

which is why it’s viral for dems to understand, moving forward, that they don’t need to find better politicians or policymakers, they need to find better performance artists! like it or not, you’ve either gotta play the new game or get left behind

whenever monoculture had numerous distinct mediums, each could specialize in it’s own particular area of culture. but, now that there’s really only one remaining, it’s expected to pick up the slack & augment all the features of the other previous mediums

the reason entertainment has become such a vital component of politics over the past decade is because politics is simply the LAST remaining monocultural medium through which everyone in society experiences the same thing collectively

not really a gambler, but if i was putting money down i’d feel pretty secure in guessing his admins approvals will likely be hovering in the high-30’s by early next yr… particularly as tarrifs’s are implemented, he starts saying crazy shit, being corrupt & messing with obamacare/SS/medicare

once he actually starts implementing his unpopular & economically damaging policies, that voters didn’t elect him to focus on, the GOP will quickly find there’s a big difference between a popular mandate & “i guess we’ll try these guys for now, cuz we’re pissed at the other guys”

i see it as an opportunity

a plurality of voters didn’t elect trump cuz they liked him or his policies (beyond vaguely general promises to tackle inflation/migration), they did so cuz inflation/migration made him the least worst option in the eyes of a subset of swing voters

current alternate reality #1: we continue to reside in the upside-down (where everything’s similar to how it was, but with a progressively increasing fucked-up twist), after having somehow been knocked out of our original timeline 10yrs ago

alternate reality #2: rubio’s being sworn in today to start his 2nd term after covid made hillary a one-term prez 4yrs ago

alternate reality #3 (original timeline we slipped out of last decade): hillary’s ending her 2nd term (covid never happened) & glenn youngkin’s being sworn in today

it’s what will, ultimately, weigh the GOP down & chip away at their electoral viability over the next 4yrs. what helped them politically in 2024 will turn into their ball & chain come ‘26 & ‘28

you never run on a problem you have zero ability to influence, they’ll learn the hard way (like truss)

the prez, congress & govt in general can’t control inflation, there’s just simply very little they can do (absent price controls, which introduce their own major issues)

running so overtly on “fixing” it, without any ability to do so, will almost certainly prove to be one of trump’s big mistake

people tend to prioritize their immediate needs first & the better off they feel the more room they have to prioritize larger concerns

which is concerning, cuz i suspect trump is going to pull a liz truss & tank the economy with his policies/incompetence

as someone who is very concerned about climate change, it’s not exactly surprising that the level of concern decreased as economic hardship increased

you can see the same pattern play out during the 2010s recovery period. where from ‘09-‘15 concern was lower & it spiked as the economy improved

its no coincidence that, compared to 2020, when traditional media viewers where evenly split & biden held a commanding lead among new-media consumers, in ‘24 harris held a 5-8pt lead among traditional media consumers while trump held a 5-8pt lead among those who got their info from new media sources

3.) liberal figures basically made themselves available as guests ONLY to liberal platforms, limiting their reach vs the right over the past 4yrs

it was the exact opppsite dynamic to the one between ‘10-‘20, when libs dominated entertainment centric new media (vlogs, podcasts, content, etc)

2.) rightwing figures also made themselves ubiquitously available as guests to more politically agnostic entertainment centric platforms (rogan, friedman, impaulsive, diary of a CEO, barstool, etc), which ideologically indifferent, low-engagement, non-political junkies consume (aka swing voters)

here’s how the right was able to rapidly dominate the narrative among ideologically indifferent, low-info/engagement voters, who don’t regularly watch or consume traditional news & only ever pay attention to politics every 4yrs (aka, the slice of voters who decide elections) between 2020-2024
