Mark’s book “The Hidden Spring” argues that consciousness primarily about feeling, not thinking. Cognitive functions like sight and hearing, including facial recognition, don’t require consciousness. By contrast, you can’t have feelings without it.

The results claimed in 1989 by Fleishman and Pons have not been replicated, but Messinger says there is a community of 1,000 or so people still investigating cold fusion – often retired academics and engineers.

Nuclear fusion happens when two nuclei are brought so close together that the electromagnetic force (which drives them apart) is overpowered by the strong nuclear force (which brings them together). A tiny amount of mass is converted into energy.

Chinese AI Researchers Just Put a Monkey's Brain on a Computer This was not on Jane Goodall's bingo card. With 2 billion neurons, researchers say the DeepSeek-powered Darwin Monkey is a major step toward 'brain-like intelligence.'

Darwin Monkey, the largest neuromorphic computer in the world, has 2bn spiking neurons and over 100bn synapses, approaching the number of neurons in a macaque brain.

The latest LFP guest is Jonah Messinger, from Cambridge University and MIT. He tells us about cold fusion, or low-energy nuclear reactions (LNER), which was first announced in 1989, but has been mostly regarded since then as fringe science.

Demis Hassabis on our AI future: ‘It’ll be 10 times bigger than the Industrial Revolution – and maybe 10 times faster’ The head of Google’s DeepMind says artificial intelligence could usher in an era of ‘incredible productivity’ and ‘radical abundance’. But who will it benefit? And why does he wish the tech giants…

Demis Hassabis says "we’ll have something that we could sort of reasonably call AGI, that exhibits all the cognitive capabilities humans have, maybe in the next five to 10 years".

It´s the old Bowie song. We´ve got five years.
