Interaction Design and Children (IDC) conference

#IDC2025 attendees gathered to Whales of Iceland Museum for this years conference dinner —celebrating Best Paper Awards, connecting over local bites, and exploring life-sized whale sculptures. A memorable evening of recognition and reflection.

At #IDC2025, the Research & Design Challenge invited participants to reflect on the theme of Hope — through the eyes and ideas of children.

Congratulations to this year’s winning team, whose design most compellingly translated children’s ideas into a meaningful and imaginative prototype!

#IDC2025 Work-in-Progress Session 2 was a vibrant round of lightning talks and poster conversations. Researchers shared emerging ideas from co-designing inclusive AI literacy tools and playful robotics for healing, to building babyGPTs and exploring AI in classrooms.

#IDC2025 Paper sessions 3.1: Online, 3.2: Children interacting with tech and 3.3: Stereotypes, Generational and Fundamentals included a total of 12 papers. Take a look!

#IDC2025 featured two powerful panels! One brought industry leaders into dialogue on how emerging technologies—and strategic collaborations—are shaping the future of children's tech, the other explored how partnerships like RITEC are shaping responsible digital play.

Group 1 of the #IDC2025 Work-in-Progress sessions included both lightning talks and poster discussions. From therapy apps to AI chatbots and playful design methods, the range of ideas was inspiring! Congrats to both the Best WiP and Honorable Mention awardees!

In her #IDC2025 keynote, Janet C. Read invited us to reimagine hope-filled digital childhoods. Drawing on decades of global research in Child-Computer Interaction, her keynote challenged us to discover, dismantle, and design with care, creativity, and ethics.

#IDC2025 Paper sessions 2.1: Children, Safety, Special needs, 2.2: Understanding and Auditing AI and 2.3: AI as a tool / Using AI included a total of 18 papers, including the best short paper, and an honorable mention for best full paper. Take a look!

The welcome reception at #IDC2025 brought together old friends and new faces over drinks, laughter, and great conversations. A special moment: this year's chairs passed the torch as next year’s host city was officially announced — stay tuned for 2026!

#IDC2025 welcome session introduced this year’s theme: Hope. It celebrated our organizers, volunteers, and sponsors—and gave stats on papers and acceptance rates. Yasmin Kafai’s keynote called on us to empower children as curious, creative, and critical designers in an AI-driven world.
