The federal government this week laid off almost every staff position in their special education division. This included the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, Office of Special Education Programs, and most of the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights.

6/ Special education programs will greatly be impacted by the long-term effects of these layoffs. Without funding, schools will not be able to support these critical programs for students, leaving many without a support system for their education.

4/ The second major impact will be significant delays to data collection along work around monitoring compliance to federal rules and regulations. This data is essential to protecting student’s rights and ensuring equal access to education.

3/ Without staff to send proposals and administer grants, that puts funding for this critical special education programs in danger for the next school year.

2/ There will be two major long-term consequences of this layoff: The first harmful impact is to special education funding for ‘26-27. The first rounds of grant applications and awards begin as soon as November (specifically for IDEA programs).

‘Why don’t I see my friends anymore?’ Parents fear deportations are coming to SC schools. Families with mixed immigration status or without legal authorization to be in the US are fearing deportations could come to their children’s SC schools.

“My fear is that we're going to just see a whole bunch of kids left behind because they're too afraid to attend, and that's not going to be good for either the kids or the community at large,” Rainville said.
