I'd guess it's different rates of erosion likely caused by varying levels of sediment. There are quite a lot of bizarre shapes that are similar in the SW desert of the US. It's also possible to see those layers of sediment in occasional hillsides. I might root around in some old pics for examples.

Personally, I think you got the best part - the sound. I love hearing them fly overhead. If only I had the camera handy when they flew over us. I did catch one shot, but they were way high. I missed the one where they almost skimmed the tree tops. I think they're done for now... maybe next spring? 🤞

Wonderful catch!!! What you have are the Cackling (Aleutian) Geese. (www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Cackli...) They are smaller than the Canada Geese and have a much more mellow honk. We hear them overhead going in both directions. Haven't caught any great audio like yours! Thanks! 🙏💞
