This is why I really hate it when people start spewing that "buhhh the law doesn't matter anymore u dumb lib" nonsense.

There are people fighting for their rights in court right now and winning; I'm not going to stand here and say they're fools.

As we speak, there are people reunited with their families because of the law. They're not rounding errors.

The rule of law is under a sustained assault now, yes. That's not the same as it being *dead.*

None of this should be happening in the first place, no, but the answer isn't to give up.

To be a doomer about all this is to be an unpaid propagandist for the fascists. Period.

It turns out that the problem with trusting billionaires like Jeff Bezos to be responsible stewards of the news industry is that billionaires like Jeff Bezos are moral cretins.

"No, the thing that has changed is that Jeff Bezos has developed a political agenda. He is on Team Billionaire. ... It canโ€™t stomach leaving journalists in charge of the journalism, because surely the billionaire owner has better instincts and deeper insights. "

Jeff Bezos, Moral Cretin What the decay of the Washington Post says about the future of the journalism industry

I endorse this from @davekarpf.bsky.social

"There is one thing I want to say about Jeff Bezosโ€™s decision yesterday to fire 300 journalists from the Washington Post yesterday.

"(Well, two things, I guess. The first being: fuck you, Jeff Bezos.)"

That's the thing about paid newsletters: if you're a take-merchant who mostly aggregates and shares opinions, you *might* have a shot at making some money. If you do actual in-depth reporting, etc., though, it's... a lot rougher

What's been weird to learn is that other leaders of institutions act the same way. Some of them hoard and protect their influence like it's money because they, too, are rich. You don't get rich by giving your money away and (they seem to believe) you don't get powerful by exercising your power. But, in fact, that is often how power works: using power can help build power. At the very least, power holds no value unless it is exercised, which alone is a valid reason to exercise it. If you are powerful but never use your power, you are not powerful.
I'm talking here primarily about the huge, obvious loci of power โ€” the centers of power that exist in part to serve as checks on other centers of power.
Congress vis-a-vis the presidency. The media relative to the government. Higher education in contrast to misinformation. But they often aren't serving as checks on what's unfolding, or are obviously and bizarrely using their power only sparingly, garden hoses aimed at protecting their own homes from the wildfire.
So it's left to individuals, who have stepped up where institutions have not.

I wrote about Minnesota and ICE and how average Americans are reclaiming the power that the administration is abusing.

Ahistorical perspectives really bother me because they erase actual people's work while also making it harder in the present because of a lack of understanding of what came before.

Call your reps to demand they:
1) Abolish ice (every day!)
2) Vote no whenever the "Make Elections Great Again" Act comes up. It's an atrocious set of restrictions on elections made to make voting harder. Fuck that! Don't let them hear the end of it.

Remember. Squid can't use phones, so we have to.

ICE needed to steal the data of everyone in this country and partner with Palantir to do their evil deeds. People in neighborhoods blowing on whistles and honking horns is often enough to defeat them. Somehow this thought came to me just now, and gave me a little bit of hope.

Screenshot of an X.com post by The Associated Press (@AP) stating that dozens of immigrant families protested for better treatment behind fences at a Texas detention facility, where a 5-year-old Ecuadorian boy and his father were sent after being detained in Minnesota. Below is a video thumbnail showing a crowd gathered outdoors along a fenced walkway; many people wear bright blue or red outerwear, and some hold signs.

After being held in two of them as a boy, I fought for decades urging America to never again build concentration camps and put human beings in them. It breaks my heart to watch this happen twice now in my own lifetime.

This is Literally the Job Political journalists need to stop pretending they don't know what Republicans are going to do.

"They told us what they were going to do. They published it. They put it on a website. And when it happened, the press was surprised."

Hoo boy, everyone should bookmark this @parkermolloy.com piece & make sure everyone involved in media reads it.
