Try Moby Dick, feeling free to skip chapters you get bored by. This is no more sacrilegious than picking up a New Yorker only for the cartoons. MD has more comedy than you’d expect for such a holy tome of US literature, and certainly pages of soaring prose.

Got a Christmas CD out to play this morning, and have been playing vinyl so exclusively the last few years that, truly, I checked to make sure I was starting with Side One.
