Alaska SeaLife Center When orphaned or stranded sea otters come into our care, the goal is always to give them the best possible chance at survival. Sometimes that means rehabilitation, expert veterinary care, and release...

Our friends at the Alaska SeaLife Center are dedicated to rehabilitating orphaned sea otters. Currently, all four of their rescued otter pups were taken into their care younger than six months.

In Extreme Cold, Some Animals Survive by Altering Life to an Unimaginably Slow Pace Arctic ground squirrels and wood frogs exhibit incredible survival tactics, slowing metabolism to near-death states or tolerating being frozen solid. Even zebrafish embryos can suspend development when oxygen is scarce. These natural abilities to suspend vital functions offer profound insights for medical advancements in organ preservation and emergency care, potentially revolutionizing human health.

Taking it easy for #arcticanimals like the #ArcticGroundSquirrel is necessary for survival.

This Giant Dinosaur Walked in Circles 150 Million Years Ago – Scientists Uncover Its Secrets A rare looping dinosaur trackway in Colorado reveals new clues about sauropod movement and hints that the massive animal may have walked with a limp. Researchers studying an unusual looping trail of fossilized footprints in the United States have uncovered evidence suggesting the dinosaur that left them may have walked with a limp. Near the town of Ouray in Colorado lies one of the most continuous and sharply turning sauropod trackways ever identified. This remarkable series of fossil footprints provides an unusually complete record of a dinosaur’s movement across ancient ground. Dr. Anthony Romilio from the University of Queensland’s Dinosaur Lab examined more than 130 individual footprints that form a 95.5-meter path created roughly 150 million years ago. “This was left in the Late Jurassic when long-necked dinosaurs such as Diplodocus and Camarasaurus roamed North America,” Dr. Romilio said. “This trackway is unique because it is a complete loop. While we may never know why this dinosaur curved back on itself, the trackway preserves an extremely rare chance to study how a giant sauropod handled a tight, looping turn before resuming its original direction of travel.” Drone mapping reveals hidden detail Co-author Dr. Paul Murphey from the San Diego Natural History Museum explained that documenting such a large tracksite required methods beyond traditional field observation. “It has been challenging to document these footprints from the ground because of the size of the trackway,” Dr. Murphey said. “We used drones to capture the entire trackway in high resolution. “With these images we generated a detailed 3D model, which could then be digitally analyzed in the lab at millimeter-scale accuracy.” Using the aerial imagery, researchers built a detailed digital reconstruction of the entire footprint trail. This model allowed the team to examine the shape, spacing, and orientation of the prints with far greater precision than would be possible in the field alone. Footprints reveal possible limp The digital reconstruction allowed scientists to retrace the dinosaur’s route across the ancient landscape. “It was clear from the start that this animal began walking toward the northeast, completed a full loop, and then finished facing the same direction again,” Dr. Romilio said. “Within that loop, we found subtle, yet consistent, clues to its behavior. One of the clearest patterns was a variation in the width between left and right footprints, shifting from quite narrow to distinctly wide.” He continues, “This shift from narrow to wide step placement shows that footprint width can change naturally as a dinosaur moves, meaning short trackway segments with seemingly consistent widths may give a misleading picture of its usual walking style.” Uneven steps suggest a limp “We also detected a small but persistent difference in left and right step lengths, of about 10 centimeters or 4 inches,” Dr. Romilio adds. “Whether that reflects a limp or simply a preference for one side is hard to say. There are many long dinosaur trackways around the world where this method could be applied to extract behavioral information that was previously inaccessible.” Reference: “Track by Track: Revealing Sauropod Turning and Lateralised Gait at the West Gold Hill Dinosaur Tracksite (Upper Jurassic, Bluff Sandstone, Colorado)” by Anthony Romilio, Paul C. Sea Otter Cam Which exhibit otter are you most like? Take this personality quiz to discover which of our exhibit otters you're most similar to. Answer eight questions and find out if you're most like Ivy, Opal, Selka, or Rosa! The southern sea otters in our Sea Otters exhibit love to play with toys, lounge in ice buckets or just snooze. We feed our exhibit otters several times a day, often putting the food in toys to stimulate the otters' natural behavior of pounding and working to get food out of shells. Our aquarists also teach the otters behaviors, like holding a target with their paws or walking onto a scale. Training keeps our otters mentally and physically stimulated — it also makes working with the otters safer for us and less stressful for them. We give each of our otters regular breaks behind the scenes. Sometimes they're working as a companion or surrogate with our Sea Otter Program; sometimes they're just getting a chance to enjoy live food they don't get on exhibit. Not to worry — they'll be back to join their gal pals soon! Looking for more ways to stay entertained? Marine celebration: Sea otters at the Vancouver Aquarium have 'World Cup fever' With 100 days until kickoff, the aquarium's beloved ocean critters are excited. World Cup fever isn't just affecting people in Vancouver. The Vancouver Aquarium says its 10 sea otters have started celebrating the 2026 FIFA World Cup early, with just 100 days to go until the first kickoff. In just 107 days, Canada will face Qatar on June 18 at BC Place. This matchup favours our national team, ranked 27th in the world, whereas Qatar ranks 51st. Unfortunately, Canada's odds dwindle after the first matchup, with its second match against Switzerland (ranked 17th) on June 24. But you better believe the Aquarium's arguably most adorable critters will bring the energy for every game — and all the days leading up to it. Destination Vancouver captured some footage of the marine mammals' infectious antics in their enclosure, showcasing their playful behaviours and adorable, pint-sized faces. Sea otters are superheroes of the sea, combating surging sea urchin populations The Vancouver Aquarium rescued the otters as orphaned pups, and the Canadian and U.S. government agencies deemed all of them "non-releasable" because of their young age at the time of rescue. They didn't learn the life skills necessary to sustain themselves in the wild. Of course, these critters are more than just impossibly adorable. As a keystone species, the northern sea otter "plays a vital role in protecting the kelp forest ecosystems along the Pacific coast," according to the aquarium. Without otters, sea urchin populations would run wild, devastating kelp forests. Sea urchins have a seriously sturdy exterior, and otters use rocks and other stone tools to crack them. They are the only animal that does this with urchins, and since they were reintroduced to B.C.'s outer coast, urchin populations have stabilized. If you want to see more of the sea otters, check out the Vancouver Aquarium's two otter livestreams. With a file from Nick Laba

Sports fans aren't the only ones celebrating 100 days until the World Cup.

The 6 Most Colorful Places You Can Find in Alaska Alaska is known for its breathtaking beauty. Everywhere you look in the Last Frontier, you’ll be inspired and awestruck. From its massive glaciers and gorgeous coastline to its delightful architecture and stunning night skies, Alaska’s beauty is something you don’t forget. With such vast and varied landscapes and scenery, there is so much to see—so much color to experience. The following are not only six of my favorite views in the Last Frontier, but also the most colorful places in Alaska. I believe each one deserves a spot on your bucket list. 1. Mendenhall Glacier There are many glaciers I could add to this list, but Mendenhall Glacier is one of the most stunning—and one of the most accessible. Here, you can see bright blue ice caves, thick green trees, rugged grey rock walls, and snow-capped mountain peaks in the distance. Hike, kayak, or just drive up to the views. This is one Alaska destination you don’t want to skip over. 2. Fairbanks There are so many things to love about Fairbanks, but for a splash of color, plan a visit to watch the Northern Lights dance across the night sky. Fairbanks is one of the best places in Alaska to admire the aurora borealis, with peak viewing season stretching from early fall through spring. You can always take a guided tour to prime viewing spots or consider booking an Airbnb outside of town. There’s something delightful about snuggling up with your pajamas on, watching the colorful nighttime performance above you. 3. Brooks Range There are some truly gorgeous mountain ranges in Alaska, but one of the most colorful is the Brooks Range. This impressive range stretches 700 miles and is believed to be more than 126 million years old. There are some communities scattered throughout the range, but the majority is untouched wilderness. Hike, backpack, fish—this is an outdoor lover's paradise. And while there are views all year that will impress you, fall is when this mountain range truly comes alive in color. The vibrant fall foliage is striking—it's absolutely stunning. 4. Ketchikan Ketchikan is a popular tourist destination, and it’s easy to see why. This gorgeous community, nestled within the Inside Passage, has a rich history, numerous claims to fame, and natural beauty on all sides. This may be one of the most colorful communities in Alaska, as the exteriors of its many shops and restaurants feature bright colors, and as you walk around, you'll discover totem poles of all sizes and colors. Fun fact: Ketchikan is home to the largest collection of standing totem poles in the world. 5. Hatcher Pass Hatcher Pass is one destination that’s at the top of my bucket list. This incredible area, situated in the Talkeetna Mountains, is home to gold mine ruins from the 1930s, countless outdoor activities, and breathtaking views. Every season is mesmerizing in this area, but if color is what you are after, there’s something extraordinary about the summer when Hatcher Pass becomes a sea of vibrant wildflowers or in the fall when autumn’s palette covers the trees and grasses. 6. Homer Spit Homer Spit is a bucket list destination for many people, and rightfully so. This area is known for its gorgeous mountains, glaciers, and vast views. Here, the colors stand out along the coast, the beaches, and the forest, but our favorite colorful view? The skies. Both the sunrises and the sunsets on the Homer Spit are inspiring, vibrant, and bold. You’ll want the colorful displays to last as long as possible and time to stand still. It’s easy to find colorful places in Alaska—this is one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. after all. The above destinations are just six of my favorite vibrant spots in the Last Frontier. Let me know which places you love by filling out this nomination form. I’d love to hear from you. And if you are feeling inspired, make sure to plan your own Alaska adventure using Only In Your State’s itinerary planner.

You don't have to travel far and wide to see and experience all the colors of the rainbow in #Alaska, but there are six places that are particularly eye-catching. 🌈
