This Friday's Derbyshire Archaeological Society talk is from Laura Parker, York Archaeology's (@yorkarchaeology.bsky.social) community archaeologist. She'll be talking about the excavations at Chester Green, Derby's Roman settlement.

I've started stockpiling Christmas goodies, but haven't caved and opened any yet. Though the packet of peppermint chocolate almonds is calling to me!!
25.11.2025 22:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If you like adventure games, folk horror, and archaeology, well, you've probably already played this. But if you haven't, you should! #archaeology
25.11.2025 16:05 β π 14 π 7 π¬ 3 π 1I would happily play games like this every day!!

Not had much time to get stuck in to the landscape archaeology books I amassed over the summer, but finally got around to this little beauty! Reading these books, I get such a sense of finding my people! π

Ah, yeah you can see the difference between the 1st and 2nd photos of those roundhouses before the slots were dug.
18.11.2025 11:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0What's the area of darker ground around the two roundhouses to the right of the photo?
18.11.2025 11:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It was a sense of mild panic over here! (Thankfully, it's back online now!)
17.11.2025 22:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The @natlibscot.bsky.social maps portal is down and I'm quite at a loss. Is there such a thing as a map addiction? #MapMonday
17.11.2025 20:10 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There's a plain slab similar to that inside Tideswell church. The story goes that a chap was spotted next to the slab, and when questioned, he said he was researching his family tree, and an ancestor had requested to be buried here under a simple slab. Before then, nobody had a clue about it.
17.11.2025 13:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Looks like a fine drop!!
15.11.2025 23:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0As I virtually wander across the country, exploring LiDAR data, old maps, and aerial photos, I'm always reminded on how lucky we are in Derbyshire to have such a fantastic HER, with tons of detail and plenty of attached reports to listings. #Derbyshire #archaeology #heritage
13.11.2025 20:11 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A lovely bit of Derbyshire pride tonight, hearing Mike Haken of the Roman Roads Research Assoc. (@romanroads.bsky.social) talk about the Derbyshire HER as being "...unquestionably one of the best in the country!" Hats off to Steve & Dana of @derbyshirearch.bsky.social, for our ace HER! π

Some nice community-led archaeology on the site of Glapwell Hall - 17C on the possible site of a medieval chapel.
We need some help identifying the decorative mount - is it ormolu (maybe from the hall itself?) or just a later reproduction. Any historic furniture experts out there?
Interesting 2-day event by Mercian Archaeological Services CIC (@mercianarch.bsky.social) and Nottingham Trent Uni.
Also, there's pizza! π

Some great-sounding short #heritage and #archaeology courses going on down in #Essex! Bit too far for me, so if anyone hears of anything similar kicking off in #Derbyshire, give me a nod.

Yeah, it's certainly not the money that's the driver for all of this. I've had so much fun this year getting involved with various digs, projects, short course, and a range of organisations. Still no idea where I'm heading, but definitely enjoying the journey!
27.10.2025 21:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0All kinds, really. But it was a light-hearted statement, as most have been really supportive and helpful after the initial "Are you bonkers?" look.
27.10.2025 15:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Thanks! The amount of quizzical looks I get from archaeologists when they hear that I'm trying to pivot to a career in archaeology in my mid-40's has made me question it a few times. But landscape archaeology is definitely some sort of addiction!
27.10.2025 10:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Landscape archaeology has always been my archaeological focus. So when I started exploring how I can carve out some sort of career in archaeology, this course by @mercianarch.bsky.social was the first thing I booked on! 5 of the best days! I can't recommend it enough!

My wife & a good friend of ours released this moody, folk-horrory beauty into the world yesterday. With Autumn upon us, this is a great soundtrack to the months ahead.
Inspired by Max Porter's novel "Lanny", the album digs into themes of nature, myth and community.
