if it's more expensive and doesn't use bifurcation, probably active
depends on whether or not you're using a passive or active card
a passive card is split (say 16 lanes by 4 drives = 4 lanes each) so each drive you add would be 4 more lanes
if using an active card, that uses a set number of lanes (usually 16) and will always consume those lanes
