It’s a real service to have all of this fact-checking in one thread.

My photo shows two Roman gold-band mosaic glass bottles on display at the Met Museum. Made of translucent cobalt blue, turquoise green, opaque white, and colorless glass encasing gold leaf. Both bottles have globular bodies and cyclindrical necks with horizontal everted rims. The larger bottle on the left measures 10.5cm in height and has a slightly concave bottom. The smaller bottle on the right measures 4.8cm in height and has a flat bottom.

According to the museum label: β€œGold-band cast glass was a particularly opulent type of early Roman glassware. It combines canes of brightly colored translucent and opaque glass with strips of gold leaf encased between layers of colorless glass. Only a limited number of vessel shapes were made in this way, and some of the most common are small globular or carinated bottles such as these. They were presumably used to store expensive cosmetics and perfumes”.

Roman scent bottles made of gold-band mosaic glass.

Beautiful examples of the skill of ancient glassmakers some 2,000 years ago!

The fact that the online news-reading experience is increasingly and insanely hostile doesn't get nearly the amount of attention that paywalls do, but it really should

The MAHA Report Cites Studies That Don’t Exist The Trump administration’s β€œMake America Healthy Again” report misinterprets some studies and cites others that don’t exist, according to the listed authors.

I remember when government reports were at least a little trustworthy

Phantom of the Opera is a lot like Frankenstein in that the modern cultural understanding of the story is severely distorted from the original novel. This tweet gets pretty close to the gist of the book, though:

this is why you shouldnt believe what you see on the internet. It was actually closer to 50 years. His name was Porphyrios, he actually caused the creation of entirely new trading routes just to avoid him and was declared enemy of the state by Justinian. He is the hero we need.

This isn’t particularly useful but, well, I hear from a lot of people from the science-centered agencies these days (NIH, NOAA, EPA, couple others) and the degree of, I dunno, grimness (?) is really palpable. The whole gov scientific enterprise is just getting ground into dust. It sucks so hard.

depends on your beat. it’s been bad out there for govt agency scientists awhile

if you didn’t already have a reason not to rank Cuomo in the primary: he had such a culture of fear going at the state DEC that trying to talk to a bear scientist or a beetle guy was like breaking into Fort Knox

Different domains, though largely related to things the administration would like to call 'controversial,' such as climate or autism research.

I just think people should know that I have NEVER in 15 years as a science reporter had scientists tell me they couldn't talk to me for political reasons. It's now happened several times within the last week alone.

Trump Administration Proposes Sharp Budget Cuts for H.H.S. (Gift Article) An internal memo proposes carving out $40 billion from federal health agencies while eliminating dozens of programs. Congress has ultimate appropriation authority.

autism program funding is also on the chopping block, as if you needed proof that everything they say about autism, including their claim to care about it, is a lie: β€œThe document also proposes eliminating dozens of programs focused on…autism, teen pregnancy, lead poisoning, opioid recovery…”

I have no profound ending here, just that my relationships with those kids were so close to my heart, and there could be nothing further from the truth than the way Kennedy talked about autism.

They were awesome people living full lives. They and their families needed support to do things a little differently. But hearing him talk about them like that? β€œThey’ll never pay taxes, they’ll never write a poem,” made my jaw drop.

17.04.2025 16:42 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The kids I worked with had more profound needs, with the kind of behaviors like stimming that Kennedy spoke of with such disdain. (PS why is he so weird about toe-walking??)

Talk of epidemics and regressions and terrible depictions of autism were already getting pushback in the community then, but it wasn’t unusual to see it in the media. And it’s just so demoralizing to see it back in the mouth of such highly placed people.

Before I was a reporter, I was a teacher’s aide at a school for autistic kids who needed 1:1 support. That was in the early 2000s and I was struck by how stuck in that era Kennedys language was.

Rising Autism Rates Are Not an 'Epidemic' Autism rates are rising, but RFK, Jr. is wrong about the reasons. Here’s what the science says

Here’s how we know that RFK Jr’s alarmism about autism isn’t backed up by evidence. www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-....
