This is a thread of disappointment also because I was being naive when offered positions (and declining them) and also because I just need to get this out. The best people on the job are those with passion and talent (and knowledge), not those with certificates.

I always though academia would be more open to discipline-changers as many (if not most) non-lab skills are transferrable. But interestingly (and luckily) I found a job at an NGO first.

It's the vicious circle of "you need experience to get experience" again. But why do I need to show I can drive a FIAT car if I can drive Ferrari, BMW and Smart?!

I have
- a PhD in Biophysics incl. 1st author pubs ✅
- tracked movement of 1000s of cells ✅
- ringed 100s of birds ✅
- monitored/surveyed several bird species ✅
- written ornithological reports ✅
but am "high risk candidate" for ornithological postdoc ❌
