In that pic it’s damp And a tiny bit slippery. When dry it’s kinda like feeling concrete.

Photo of a light grey lichen growing on yellowish rock. The lichen is roundish and of a mound shape. The main body is comprised of convoluted folds and branches. Round discs of varying sizes (called apothecia) cover about 50% of the lichen.

Green Rock Posy Lichen (Rhizoplaca melanopthalm). NWT, Canada. Lichen is about 2cm, left to right. #lichen #fungi #fungifriends.

Photo of an orange lichen growing the length of a crack/crevice in a rock surface. The rock is a pink/rose colour. The lichen is ribbon-like in shape. The centre of the ribbon has a sugary look to it (hence the name). The outside of the ribbon consists of tightly packed branches radiating out from the sugary middle of the lichen.

Sugared Sunburst Lichen (Xanthoria sorediata). Northwest Territories, Canada.

90% are from the Yellowknife area. And of these, the majority are from accessible, lakeside locations. If you ever go, don't hesitate to get in touch…I don’t live there anymore, but I can give you directions to some of the best, accessible locations.

Photo of an orange rock posy lichen growing on rock. The body of the lichen looks like a cream coloured leaf but in this case it’s almost completely covered by the lichen’s orange apothecia (reproductive structures). The apothecia look like a mound of tiny orange donuts.

Lichen, Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca (orange rock posy lichen). NWT, Canada. Lichen is about 2cm, left to right. #Lichen #fungi #fungifriends

Thanks! I‘ve never tried IDing our many Newfoundland Sphagnums to species. Maybe you can help? I have a ton of Sphagnum pics:)

It’s all part of the same individual. The cream coloured, flat part is called the thallus (the main body of the lichen) and the round, orange discs are reproductive structures that produce spores…which (together with an algal partner) go on to form new lichen individuals.

Photo of a yellow-green crustose lichen growing flat on reddish rock. The lichen is sort of rectangular and is made up of numerous tiny “islands” of yellow-green with black lines separating the islands. In the top left you can see a tiny bit of similar looking, but grey, lichen.

Rhizocarpon sp #lichen in the process of “taking over” another species of crustose lichen. This Rhizocarpon is the yellow-green colour. The species it is taking over is grey…see top, left of pic. A lichenologist recently explained that several species of Rhizocarpon do this.

Thanks, Pipa! You live in a beautiful land!
And here’s an icon of my land (Newfoundland and Labrador)…Labrador Tea Flowers. An early summer bloomer that I look forward to each year.

Yes, for sure, nature gives us so much. Connecting with nature is healing and necessary…and we all need to keep her safe.

That’s pretty much it. A 20,000 person dot in a truly massive rocky, lakey wilderness. It‘s a 1,500km drive to the nearest city.

Yes, it is. Orange Oyster is one of several common names for that species.

Yep! If I was a crustose lichen, this is where I’d choose to live 😀

A huge part of the landscape around Yellowknife (where I lived) is exposed bedrock. Here’s a pic of downtown Yellowknife.

Photo of four lichens growing flat on grey rock. A yellow lichen is growing in a diagonal line across the photo. A dark grey oval lichen is growing along the yellow line as is a larger, round, off white lichen. A small amount of brown lichen is at the right side end of the line of yellow lichen.

Crustose lichen mix: Candelariella (yellow), Rhizocarpon (dark grey) Dimelaena (off white) and Acarospora (brown). Photo covers about 6cm, left to right. NWT, Canada. #lichen #fungi #fungifriends
