Fascism For First TimeΒ Founders Over the last year or so I've seen a disturbing tendency in tech/startup/VC worlds to buy into the neoreactionary view that for startups to be successful they need to get on board the Trump train. Yes, there are the big name folks who everyone knows about and who didn't really surprise anyoneβ€”Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, David Sacks, Elon Musk (pre-fallout)β€”but the more troubling trend has been watching younger entrepreneurs and VCs listen to their podcasts, read their posts and books, and slowly nod along to the idea that democracy is holding back innovation.

The fact that state money was being used to get a YouTuber to come to a place he probably would have visited anyway is probably why Estonian radio wouldn't stop its wall-to-wall coverage when he was there.

Speed's team asked them if they'd pay, though he was on a European tour that he'd arranged. Just like when they paid the big bucks to get Robbie Williams and Prince Andrew to come to Estonia, they rolled over and paid up. There are other ways to boost the economy, but government aren't interested.

The Estonian government, through its agencies, paid €30,000 in flight and security costs for iShowSpeed to come to Tallinn. Embarrassing to see the government still being such willing marks for grift during a cost-of-living crisis. share.google/C4ZcrkpME0JT...

No matter which iteration of Tallinn City Government, they never put up notices saying if the trams are stopped for a major public event. There are people fruitlessly and silently queueing for trams that will not come.

Astonishing what can be achieved when focus is cost of living, not using the jargon of anointed career party hacks. Can you imagine any Estonian politician outside 1 or 2 even addressing people authentically in their everyday words?

Being hated by the Democrat establishment actually helps Zohran.

No party will ever vote for finance reform, meaning they're mostly in a race to appear more "business-friendly" (read: indulgent) to oligarchs. Businessmen have concentrated power, state-private monopolies have gone unchecked, and our politicians choose the least offensive, not the best, President.

The more I see the conceit, arrogance, and utter disregard for voters of the vast majority of Estonian political parties, the more I think the whole system needs to be changed. They work for us, not for the top donors.

Lift up the rock, let the lice scurry off, let's elect some people who care.

Sain just aru, miks Urmas Sáárumaa reformierakonna linnapeakandidaat on. PÀrtel-Peeter Pere sai kahjuks alles üleeile teada, et monopolimees on vÀljamáeldud tegelane.

Back in 2021 on my podcast with Maris Hellrand, I gave PΓ€rtel-Peeter Pere a chance to discuss something he's actually good at - urban planning. I didn't realise he'd be so hungry for power and recognition that he would do and say anything, no matter how idiotic.

The worst thing is that Tallinn City Government under the current coalition has weaned the city institutions off casual corruption, cleaned the snow, and got the buses going places people actually want to go. But Reform want to get back to carving up the pie and screwing us over with Centre.

SΓΆΓΆrumaa got 700 votes in his one attempted election. Nobody in Tallinn wants him, except Reform, who want to lock in his donation and make sure Centre and Isamaa don't get it. The guy has been eyeing up high office for a while, presumably to protect the position of his businesses. It stinks.

How can anyone in Estonia watch the Reform Party appoint an unelected oligarch (Urmas SΓΆΓΆrumaa) as Mayor of Tallinn, and with a straight face say that the country is a successful democracy?

As we become the thing we loathe, so Estonia is rewarding rich men with political office like Russia does.

On one hand, the reach and engagement on Bluesky aren't where I'd like them to be.

On the other hand, none of the biggest asshats I have to deal with on Facebook use Bluesky, so it's a bubble, but a comforting one.

If I had an iPhone, given its value is so widely known, I'd be putting some kind of bumper on it to make people think it's old and crap, rather than showing it off like a wine glass in the middle of town. It's like going into the city with a gold necklace.

Not sure why people hold their phones like pizza slices to talk to people when they're not on video. Is it a hygiene thing (not wanting to put it to their ear)? Or just wanting to seem important?

I can't tell you all the reasons why Pohlak shouldn't be anywhere near a major leadership role, but a bit of light Googling will tell you. Did he win fairly? Well yes, but in a system where clubs, which need his patronage, have the vote. See also the FIA or FIFA President.

Congratulations to the in-no-way problematic Aivar Pohlak. In his time as Estonian Football Association President, Iceland, Albania, and North Macedonia have all qualified for major tournaments, while Estonia has not. Young prospects are wasted, women's football is sidelined. More of that coming up.

The vice here isn't the phones, it's the way their social apps are gamed to attract students' attention. It means they're never 100% in the topic being explained. Again: I'm not asking everyone to use notebook and abacus, but smartphones are not a panacea.

If you explain how to teach a class of 15-Y.O.s with phones in hands while simultaneously making sure they're not secretly on Snapchat, I'm all ears. Been a teacher 11 years, happy to try methods, tech works, phones don't with notifications. If there were a way of turning off all social apps, maybe.
