Shapiro was never actually involved in any music scene but was terminally online when, in the 2010s, people were tweeting “Migos could have made Yesterday, but the Beatles couldn’t have made Bando”

The “cool” position was to kinda hate on Paul (except for Abbey Road side B) and argue that the more obscure Beatles songs were the good ones

I saw Elliott Smith play a cover of “Dig a Pony.” The Elephant 6 bands loved the Beatles and they were the pinnacle of Gen X cool in 1997

The first song my underground metalhead guitar teacher tried to teach me was “Rain”

There really wasn’t any cultural capital in hating them until later. If you didn’t like them you just didn’t listen to or talk about them. It wasn’t a “cool” position to take until later. Most 90s indie artists openly admired them and covered their songs

I spent the second half of the 90s reading every music magazine, hanging out at Amoeba records, going to shows at the Gilman etc, and working at an independent video store. The only people I knew who hated the Beatles were noise and experimental artists
