Universities make concerted choices about the content they put on their websites - it is their face to the world 🌍 In our new paper led by @katrinamcchesney.bsky.social, we looked to see how parents are positioned in institutional websites in Australia and New Zealand. doi.org/10.1007/s107...

Horrible news today that the govt is unilaterally directing the disbanding of humanities and social science panels from one of the most important research funds in New Zealand. A short but on point response from Universities NZ.

parenting on Australian and New Zealand university websites? Katrina McChesney, University of Waikato | Shannon Mason, Nagasaki University." The left side of the slide is a clip art-style graphic of a grid pattern of graduation hats, with some of the hats replaced with coloured icons representing parents and parenting: a woman carrying a child (pink), a man holding hands with a child (green), a woman with a pram (yellow), a child holding a balloon (red), a man leaning over a baby on a change table (blue), and a family with two adults and two children all holding hands (purple).

A screenshot of our cover slide. Text reads "How do demographic aspects of identity affect academics' experiences of peer review? Kay Hammond - Auckland University of Technology; Katrina McChesney - University of Waikato; Julie Trafford - Auckland University of Technology. The right side of the slide is a cartoon image showing a researcher (drawn small, wearing a white coat, and at the bottom of the screen) looking up at much larger figures with serious faces seated behind a bench holding/reading a document. The cartoon implies a power dynamic between reviewers and researchers.

Great to be at the #NZARE2024 NZ Assn for Research in Education conference at @waikatouniversity.bsky.social this week. Yesterday I presented on how demographic/identity factors affect people's experiences of academic peer review (collaborative work with Kay Hammond & Julie Trafford of AUT).

We used the Mana model (by Melinda Webber and Angus Macfarlane) to frame a strengths-based look at what supported success for these Māori learners. Students particularly emphasised mana ūkaipō (sense of place), mana tū (sense of resilience), and mana whānau (sense of family).
