I watched that Noclip 2 x Computer Worlds fest video earlier and boy I may just be drunk on vibes, aesthetics and music but I’m convinced what will save video games is a big RETVRN to y2k aesthetics and electronic music.
I suppose how could it not. I played Diablo 2 when I was 13. I remember widening my eyes at the flyer for WoW in the Warcraft 3 box. I’m 38 now. It’s been over half my life. But it’s interesting to sit with.
One of the things I’ve realised about playing WoW again super casual recently and now this Kaplan I interview is making me realise how much of an influence Blizzards design philosophy and story telling has had on my life. Both from Warcraft, Diablo and WoW.
On one hand there’s a five hour interview with Jeff Kaplan. On the other it’s with the monotone robotics suit guy. A monkey paw if ever there was one.

I have been playing retail WoW again. Oh dear. Still manages to slide its claws back in even all these years later. Still, it’s slick and fun. Not sure about the millions of elves that are in the game now but what you gonna do.
I think part of it is the mythological China setting. I know we’ve had lots of renditions of Journey to the West. But this is probably the most high fidelity and edgy version. Looks nice too, which helps. I’m hoping the sequel builds a better game. As I do think they have potential.
If this game isn’t one big scam, it’s still going to have the most predatory monetisation scheme going on.

Like why are you putting stealth sections in the game other than trivial “variety” excuses. Piss.
The stealth MJ missions in Spider-Man 2 aren’t as bad as the first game but they’re pretty terrible. I think if you want stealth bits in your games you should be forced to spend time playing Tenchu, Metal Gear, Splinter Cell and Thief. Because this is shite.

This bit in the From Russia With Love game made me laugh out loud. You've got a fairly grounded, low key fight based on the one in the movie, then the most video game looking fucker of all time slides into frame.
I still havnt bought the remasters of SR but I will get around to it at some point. It really does seem like they’re taking rebuilding the setting seriously.

I’m convinced he wasn’t that involved creatively and just funded it. I suspect Warren Ellis and the two brother directors (I think they’re brothers) did most of the heavy lifting.
You know the ones who’ve never had to pot wash or deliver pizzas, or work any shite job that demeans your soul for pittance.
You move around in enough academic, laptop caste and upper-middle class adjacent circles and you learn they just wear the skin suit of “workers rights” and “classism” as talking points they actually despise people from working class backgrounds.
