AAUP-OSU Statement on the Selection of Provost Ravi Bellamkonda as Permanent OSU President

We are surprised and disappointed at the Board of Trustees’ decision to choose a new permanent university president without even consulting faculty, staff, and students. Ohio State’s system of shared governance - not to mention best practices in hiring university presidents - requires all of us having a say in the process. This hasty, undemocratic process starts this presidency on the wrong footing and sends the wrong message about our supposed shared values. The speed and secretiveness of this selection follows a troubling pattern of institutional entitlement. The last few years at Ohio State under Ted Carter have been characterized by mass arrests, a chilling of free speech, allegations of covering up abuse, and now corruption. Why risk more public mistrust when OSU is already constantly in the news for the wrong reasons and there has been so much reputational harm? Now is the time to be more careful with decision-making and more accountable, not less. In just the past two days, over 700 people–faculty, staff, students, alumni, as well as community members–signed our petition calling for a presidential search committee that reflects the democratic structure of the University Senate. That demand to be heard still stands. Going forward, we will continue to work to make sure that OSU faculty and others actually have a voice. This rushed process has given us no time to consider or discuss the merits of Provost Bellamkonda’s elevation to the presidency, but we wish him well and hope for a successful presidency. If the new president wants to win the trust of the community, he should take immediate action to show that he represents a new era - repeal Ted Carter’s anti-free speech policies, listen to abuse survivors, and commit to greater transparency and authentic shared governance going forward.

And just like that, a new permanent OSU president!

Please read & circulate our statement.

We will continue to be active in creating space for the voices of faculty & the university community. We invite all faculty to join the chapter & all who want transparency & inclusion to work with us.

Much more will be said in the coming days. The Chase Center, Wexner, & more. But whatever event triggered this resignation, the roots of the issue are much deeper. And this extends to the board of trustees which has provided over this revolving door of leadership and lack of accountability.

‘We laughed at him:’ Ohio State community reacts as President Carter announces end of Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Center for Belonging and Social Change The fabric of Ohio State’s diversity, equity and inclusion programming has begun to unravel following Thursday’s University Senate meeting.  Inside Drinko Hall’s Saxbe Auditorium, Ohio State President...

The lowlights of Carter’s tenure are many. In such a short time he managed to preside over so much damage. A major one was when he slashed all of the diversity programs in advance of the passing of Senate Bill 1.

A Year of Repression: How Ohio State Admin Repeatedly Failed Pro-Palestine Students Do we stand for “civil obedience” or defend the freedom to speak against genocide?

There will be time for a longer assessment. But April 2024 was a blemish on OSU’s history and we will not forget it. Adding my reflections from Oct 2024

I met with Carter a few days after he started here, in Jan 2024. He was meeting with Palestinian students, and I was supporting as advisor. It was awful, and, in hindsight, set the tone for the crackdown in April 2024 and his whole tenure. ⬇️

AAUP-OSU statement on Ted Carter’s resignation as OSU president:

“The students, faculty, and staff of Ohio State deserve so much better than the failed leadership that has been inflicted on this institution over the years. The repression of free speech, the dismantling of diversity, the lack of accountability to survivors - the list goes on and on. We demand a more transparent presidential search that involves the input of faculty, staff, and other university stakeholders.”

Especially visible is the contrast between what politicians & Chase director Lee Strang says and the reality that we all see.

Our cartoon series continues with Leaf and Brutus salting the campus walkways. “Really think this will keep ICE out?” says Brutus, holding a bag that says “4th amendment.” Lead replies “we’ll be here until it does,” pouring salt from a bag labeled “Protest.”

Cartoon #5! Yes, the weather’s improved recently. But it’s still ICE-y out.

The quotation from Nichols says that many faculty staffed students have been talking about the possibility of being secretly recorded in the classroom and how detrimental it would be in this political moment

describes our statement to the Lantern, saying that accuracy in media lied to people, secretly recorded them, edited their words, and still did not find any evidence of wrongdoing by OSU It continues to say that OSU has in fact over, complied with federal and state legislation that limits the free speech of students and academic freedom of faculty.
