The fences are up for preparatory work on my favourite inner city Freo project..
Depaving, rewilding and urban greening to follow soon

"The state's done good work on batteries, but there’s almost no large-scale wind and solar coming on the system — and there is unlikely to be enough of it to close coal by 2030."
The serious risk is that we lock in new gas generation for decades.

I’m so pleased to see “William Street Reimagined” project go public.
This community-led urban greening initiative is designed not just to improve Willam Street but also as a model for depaving, planting and rewilding our urban spaces.
Have your say here:

In the West Australian newspaper today.
WA needs stop Waiting Awhile on climate action.
Westport costs are blowing out before it even starts.
Westport impacts means desalination plant pipes in Cockburn Sound will likely need to be extended to avoid contamination, that could cost $1 billion.
Time to rethink this unnecessary project.

Good to see this hotel purchase for social and affordable housing by the WA Government today.
It's the kind of immediate solutions to our housing crisis that I've been calling for.
We can’t simply build our way out of WA’s housing crisis.

The always thought-provoking Brendan Foster tackles Perth’s appalling bad planning and car dependency with his trademark humor.
“…out west, where drivers happily commute across our 200-kilometre city in gas-guzzling vehicles that look eerily like tanks”

If Labor moves this way, we will happily support.
“The WA government might be supporting industry but it won't be able to dodge questions about climate — and the impact on traditional owners — much longer
Especially now with not one, but four upper house Greens MPs champing at the bit to hold it to account.”
www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05...
The latest rock art report was handed to the WA government in June 2024, but its findings were only released today.
It suggests rocks located closer to industry have suffered greater degradation than those further away.

I like what Larissa Waters had to say today:
"There’s a chance now for real reform ... They can’t blame anyone else now, because we’re saying here, we will give you the numbers to pass good reforms that helps people and the planet.
People elected us to get shit done..."
This should be a time for leadership and bolder climate action but instead it seems that the WA Government is walking away from clear and measurable climate targets and with it substantive climate action this decade.

WA would get a better return on investment by delaying the $7 billion-plus Westport project for a least a decade,
A new report from InfrastructureWA shows that keeping Freo Port running until the late 2040s ranked better than the Government’s rushed Westport plan

What we are seeing unfold should demand bold action on climate.
But we largely see is a troubling combination of timidity and business as usual.
Remember we could choose differently.

Good to be part of Stateline on ABC Perth
Balance of power is an opportunity for us to negotiate stronger action on climate, environmental protection, housing, cost of living and more.
I’m looking forward to the challenge.

“Same shit, different year,”
Australia has experienced its hottest 12-month period on record, ending with its hottest March on record, with last month seeing temperatures 2.41C above average, Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed.

Tonight was the launch of The World’s Longest City as part of @perthdesignweek The full documentary film by Harry Cunningham will premiere on April 17. A key conversation that Perth needs to have.
Hope for better housing on Hope Street.
It was great to sit down with the Fifth Estate for their Review Magazine to chat about how an ordinary-looking street in White Gum Valley is showing a way forward with gentle density and smart infill.
Great to talk about the election, the shape of the new WA parliament, and how I hope our state can better respond to the housing, climate and biodiversity crises we are experiencing.

To quote from this insightful article: “…decision to withdraw came down to a lack of evidence that WA would have the grid connections and offtake demand necessary… Electrification in WA is very slow and there is unfortunately still a big focus on gas," www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03...
No longer will I be the only Green in the WA Parliament but I will be joined by at least these four wonderful humans.
Thanks to everyone who volunteered and worked so hard to get @Sophiemcneill @timclifford_ Jess and I in.
Together we can make this change you voted for.
With the state election on Saturday, I hope these scorecards by WA’s peak body for conservation and the environment will be helpful as you cast your vote.
This is the best summary of climate, energy, and the WA election I have read.
Well worth a full read.

As I state in this Guardian article:
“WA Labor had been more focused on supporting expanded fossil fuel developments – ie Woodside’s North-West Shelf gas exporting facility – than on ensuring a rapid expansion of renewable energy”.
Foot off the hose please.

A week out from the state election and freedom of information requests have finally shone a light on the WA Government’s dismantling of environmental protection at the behest of industry.

More than 100 years!
That’s how long it will take to complete Perth’s cycling network under current funding.
Good work by @Westcycle

Essentiall reading.
Tim Winton: “Polling shows that most Western Australians want climate addressed properly as a matter of urgency. But the Cook government’s fealty to the fossil fuel industry, backed by local press barons, is almost tribal.”

Video of the year!
Great to join Perth Property Show host Trent Fleskens for an in-depth chat about the WA housing crisis.
While we come at this from very different angles, it’s surprising how much we agree on.
