With the Industrial Revolution allowing advancements in the textile industry, mechanised knitting machines enabled the mass production of pom-pom hat bases. However the pom-pom ball proved a bit trickier. It wasn't until 1930 when Margaret Tassel and her husband Allan solved the problem producing the woollen fuzzy pom-pom in quantity. This photo is the only existing picture of Margaret as she puts the technology through its paces. The number of pom-poms the contraption could produce and their quality was, as you can see, disappointing. So it is hardly surprising that their invention was quickly superseded by a machine built in New Zealand.

This machine was reluctantly commissioned by Peck & Snyder after the first prototype of their baseball cap was commissioned in 1872. Originally the cap consisted of just the cloth hat and a crown or bill but it was criticised by the first wearers as appearing incomplete. Saul Kilminster came up with the idea of adding a fabric button to the top of the cap. Something that exists to this day.

Six months after her brother, Harvey Kennedy, patented shoe laces, Sarah Kennedy invented this machine that added the cellophane wrap onto each end of shoe laces. That addition was hailed as the greatest time saving invention of its time, greatly reducing the unsuccessful attempts to thread laces through the eyelets in shoes.

In 1844 William Brockedon's sister Emily, frustrated with the dose limitation of her brothers compression technology went on to create a machine that carved a groove onto one side of the medicine tablet. At the time the groove which simplified the splitting of the tablet was though of as a marvel. Her original machine, aqua in colour included, of an array of buttons whose function, to this day, remain a mystery. The efficiency of the machine has recently been brought into question as whist there is capacity for a large quantity of tablets, it appears the groove on each tablet must be carved individually.

The media is currently obsessed with the recently invented microscopic robot whose'e sole purpose is to clean it's hosts teeth whilst they sleep.
