We study pandemics, and the resurgence of measles is a grim sign of what’s coming Controlling the spread of many infections, including measles, depends on trust in public health, which is eroding.

This is the icing on the cake for the #AUKUS clusterf**k.
We can look forward to 🇺🇸 service personnel & their families living in our community & potentially introducing these highly communicable but vaccine preventable infectious diseases here. #auspol

‘Worst thing I’ve ever seen’: CSIRO slashes climate modelling jobs Australia’s science agency is cutting more than 100 jobs in its Environment Research Unit, which critics say will crush our capacity to predict climate change.

CSIRO have now lost more jobs under the Albanese Governmet than under the Abbott Government.

We have to do better on research funding and backing our scientists.

Breaking Social

I watched Fredrik Gertten's Breaking Social film last night. It's excellent - powerful, moving, brilliantly explained. It's now touring the UK, so do look out for showings near you.

There is our urban history laid out. Had to be a golf course rather than a park the, finally, when open space is valued in its own right, along comes the "developer" mindset. Wanton destruction

Having more funds to spend on education and health and reducing poverty also provide fir social mobility. The chance to get ahead. As we had under Menzies et al in the 50s 60s 70s. Shame we don't have a liberal party now

Net replacement rates in unemployment for a single homeowner on average wage without children (%, 2024) - pink dot is at month one of unemployment and blue dot at month 60. UK rates are low by international standards

Even if AI doesn’t hit jobs in a big way, unemployment is starting to re-emerge as a policy issue. So it’s good that @sarahoconnorft.ft.com reminds us how low our unemployment benefits are, and how this can lead to people taking jobs below their skill level

If you look at other more successful cohesive countries a huge part is one common education system. Lawyers, judges, elite and the rest. All sharing the same base. We are truly stupid here. Not maximising the things that can make us stronger. #PublicEducation
