Composite model-based estimate of the ocean carbon sink from 1959 to 2022

This composite model-based estimate of the ocean carbon sink from 1959 to 2022 is similar in magnitude to the best estimate of the Global Carbon Budget but 70β% less uncertain.

The ocean was unusually hot in 2023 π
We found that this caused an unexpected decline of the ocean carbon sink, primarily driven by anomalous outgassing of COβ in the northern hemisphere extratropics.

Progression of ocean interior acidification over the industrial era
The rapid downward progression of anthropogenic carbon accelerates ocean interior acidification and threatens marine biota.
Ocean Acidification is reshaping life and biogeochemical cycles.
In our latest study, Niki Gruber and I reconstructed its progression in the global ocean interior over the industrial era, based on our previous estimates of anthropogenic carbon accumulation.
