To follow up on what Alice said a sodium percarbonate powder (often referring to oxigen in its name) is really good for removing organic based stains. You can mix it into a paste with water to set on the clothes to help remove the stain or just put it right in with your wash. It's great stuff!

I believe it's different, as most washing machines don't have a rinse cycle like dishwashers do. In my experience I've seen no real cleaning difference between powder, pods or liquid detergents for clothes, just differences like scent and price per load
