Decades of data show African weather disturbances intensify during La Niña
African easterly waves, which directly impact communities in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas, are shown to intensify during La Niña, advancing our understanding of how these weather systems in...
A study led by scientists at @miamirosenstiel.bsky.social and NCAR @ncar-ucar.bsky.social reveals how a major global climate pattern influences the African weather systems that help seed Atlantic hurricanes.

A team of scientists from the University of Miami Rosenstiel School, GATS, Inc. Embry-Riddle University and UCAR-NCAR- NSF kick off CGWaveS (Convective Gravity Waves in the Stratosphere) to understand how they form and influence weather. This research aims to improve weather and climate forecast models.

February 2025 La Niña update: La Niña today, gone tomorrow?
Weak La Niña conditions continued in January, but a transition to ENSO-neutral in the near future is likely.
La Niña conditions continue, but forecasters estimate a 66% chance of a switch to neutral in March–May. This is looking like a weak and short La Niña. Also, while La Niña’s ocean conditions are currently weak, the atmospheric component is fairly strong. Check out Emily Becker’s blog 👇
