Capital B stands in solidarity with journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort, who were arrested today in connection to their coverage of an anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protest earlier this month at a Minneapolis church.

@laurenwilliams.bsky.social says it all here. I'll add that a thriving Black press helps our country better understand itself, and better serve the people in it.

It’s the last day of the year, and @capitalb.bsky.social needs to raise $6K by midnight to support our journalism in 2026. Black news is American news, and you can help it thrive.
Just a #givingtuesday reminder of how nonprofit, community journalism can create real change. But it needs support to thrive. Your support for @capitalb.bsky.social means more impact for more folks like the residents of Fairburn & Gordon. capitalbnews.fundjournalism.org/donate/?camp...
This Giving Tuesday, your gift to Capital B will be matched, doubling your impact. Help fuel reporting that holds power accountable and makes life better for Black communities. 💛 capitalbnews.fundjournalism.org/donate/?camp...
When you support Capital B, you’re not just helping independent journalism. You’re helping communities get the change they deserve — in housing, health, democracy, and more.
The impact didn’t stop there. Several residents were hired as housing advocates, putting them in position to fight for safer living conditions for their neighbors across the city.
Because of that work, there were major repairs, real accountability for landlords, and safe housing for two dozen families who had been ignored for years. One resident told us: “No one was paying attention to us until Capital B showed up.”
Here’s what that looks like: In Atlanta, our reporting on dangerous conditions at a federally funded apartment complex — collapsing ceilings, sewage leaks, mold — sparked a yearlong investigation.
Capital B is here to close that gap. A key pillar of our three-year plan is simple and urgent: Journalism That Changes Lives. That’s not a slogan. It’s our mandate.
🧵 The stakes for @capitalb.bsky.social's journalism are getting higher. Protections for housing, healthcare, education, and voting rights are weakening — and Black communities are often the least seen and heard.
More on Capital B in the Next Three!
Truly, our biggest fear in this environment is losing out on support to keep growing and going. So join us: capitalbnews.org/donate. And follow along through the end of the year as we share more about our path forward.
CBS News & NBC News have gutted their race and culture verticals. We've seen media owners selling out their newsrooms to advance their business interests. But Capital B's journalism is independent. It's a real solution for the communities we serve. And we wont' be intimidated out of our mission.
For some much-needed real talk amid all the optimism for the future: Any big plan for a journalism org to serve Black communities in 2025 is facing major headwinds.
Our plan is to deepen local impact, strengthen journalism pipelines, and build a sustainable future. We’ll go in-depth on our strategy over the next six weeks, unpacking the why + how.
In just a few years, this approach to our reporting has sparked real change—spotlighting overlooked disaster survivors, uncovering hazardous drinking water, improving conditions for tenants, and inspiring civic action. Impact, not just impressions.
Capital B is both a mirror and a window.
A mirror that reflects the truths and lived experiences of Black communities—authentically and with integrity. A window that offers a trusted view into those realities, connecting people through honest storytelling.
When we launched Capital B in 2022, we were 9 people with a big vision: bring more, better news to communities too often under-covered or misrepresented. Today we’re 30 strong with two local newsrooms + a national desk—and we’ve learned tons about our strengths and challenges.
Today, I'm excited to share @capitalb.bsky.social's first strategic plan: capitalbnews.org/capitalb-202...
It's a new time, and a new chapter for Capital B. We spent months of deep reflection and conversation to develop this plan. It's bold and ambitious, and won't be easy — especially right now.
Will you join us in our fight to share the truth, against the odds? Follow us at @capitalb.bsky.social and go to capitalbnews.org to subscribe to our newsletters. Our stories, our experiences, our history, and our reality cannot be erased.
We’ve done so much in three years. But now, amid a powerful movement to denigrate and erase Black individuals’ and communities’ unique contributions to the US, and the truth about the systemic inequities we face — there’s so much more to do.
We’ve hosted candidate forums for local races, launched a print product and text messaging service, and toured every battleground state in advance of the ‘24 election.
Our work’s pushed FEMA to visit a forgotten Black neighborhood after a hurricane; gotten HUD to fix horrible living conditions in a housing complex; put nat’l spotlight on a shocking story of racism against a small town’s 1st Black mayor; helped ppl find food; doctors, and other resources; and more
Today is @capitalb.bsky.social’s third birthday. In our short existence, we’ve grown to a team of 30 that has done incredibly important work for the Black communities we report on and for.
This enthusiasm for finding proof that the pilots in the crash were white men has the unintended consequence of lending weight to the racist/sexist idea that their qualifications could be called into question if they weren’t.
Time is running out in 2024 to give! If you believe in the journalism we do at Capital B and want to see what we can do with the right support in 2025, please donate here: capitalbnews.org/donate
