Israeli policy to continue indefinitely with the first phase of the Trump initiative was eventually overruled by the US, which announced the imminent commencement of the its second phase. This decision, I believe, was in significant part taken so that Trump could seize center stage at the annual Davos conclave of the very rich and thoroughly objectionable after Carney’s landmark speech, that the US-led world order is no longer and had always been an illusion, generated too many headlines for the uber-narcissist’s liking.

Then, Abracadabra, the missing remains suddenly materialize. Not because Hamas located them and handed them over to Israel, but because the Israelis miraculously found them within in an area of the Gaza Strip that remains under direct Israeli military control. In other words, the remains had been there all along. Either Israel had until that moment been unaware of their location, and found them at the very last moment through a stroke of extraordinary good fortune, or it had long known where to find these remains, but chose not to retrieve them in order to use their absence as a pretext to indefinitely prolong the first phase of the plan.
