Lupines in a Yard in San Antonio, Texas My friend grieves while we search / for an authentic experience, like tacos

“draw closer. The flowers speak to us…”

I am grateful to the Academy of American Poets and to this month’s guest editor, Danusha Lameris for including my sonnet, “Lupines in a Yard in San Antonio, Texas”. I feel lucky and happy and blessed.

They could be generous and loving. Instead they are selfish and hateful.

I assume it isn’t everyone on the team, but where it applies, I see only mean, sad, petty, small, greedy punks.

They were handed impossibly shiny gold, and, the second they got to the locker room, they turned into shit.

Congrats to the U.S. men’s hockey team, AND, I’m always amazed by people who grow up with so much privilege and so much support and go on to have so much material wealth and so many resources only to lead small, stingy, selfish lives, callous to the suffering of others.

Dear Canada,

I hope you’re alright. Sorry you lost the hockey game today.

Say, if Minnesota becomes a Canadian province, we (“we”) WE would win gold in hockey forever.

And MN would be done federal occupation.

AND, I would live in a country with universal healthcare!

Let me know, eh?

What It Should Mean to Be American - Orion Magazine The private and public fight for humanity in the Twin Cities and beyond

For Orion Magazine, I wrote about the American Experiment - what it is and has been and what Minnesota shows us it could and should be. 1000 thanks to Kathleen Yale and Tajja Isen for all the edits and ideas.

Jonny, I was at an event tonight (I’ll not say where)- Bao Phi, Dobby Gibson, and Jim Moore were there too. This series has a lot of attention here. People are grateful. Thank you for all the work you’re doing to make it go so well.

Is it me? Am I the only one who, you know… if the person in front of me at the ATM leaves their receipt behind… uh… you know… checks on how they’re doing… uh… um… financially…?

A photo of a screen on an airplane, on which is written Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico).

That parenthetical is giving real “once and future” energy. Fool so foolish he thought he could change it forever. They’re placating you, fool. You’re a clown, fool.

Review: An artist and his would-be boyfriend are ‘Minor Black Figures’ Fiction: Booker finalist Brandon Taylor returns with a sensational novel about art, God and modern love.

My most recent review for the Minnesota Star Tribune finds much to admire in MINOR BLACK FIGURES, a worthy addition to Brandon Taylor's exceptional bibliography. If you like it half as much as I did, you'll love it.
