Yesss, or just going up to a librarian, telling them your research topic and getting a perfect stack of books you never even knew existed.

Man, I love how you can request almost any book from the library and they will scour the entire city to bring it to you for free. The closest thing to Santa Claus for adults.

The cover for Uncanny Magazine Issue 66, "Listen To Me And I'll Tell You A Story" by Ejiwa "Edge" Ebenebe: In the depths of the sea a little girl sits on what looks to be a giant pink/green octopus tentacle. Several other tentacles extend in the background, curling in the depths. Towards the front and surrounding the little girl is a school of pink fish, some of them stop to listen as she holds one finger up. She looks like she is about to start telling a story. On the lower right corner, another school of fish is making its way over the tentacles, towards the edge of the cover. The quote reads: "They came with machetes
asked if we knew the way to Wonderland.

We were built to love
the dead, to open our mouths
and sing praise to broken"

Congratulations to Angela Liu @angelaliu.bsky.social!

Angela Liu's poem "The Mourning Robot" is on the Rhysling longlist!

The Office Siren by Katharine Tyndall The office siren: fills a plastic cup from the water cooler, sprinkles in salt from a shaker on her desk. With one webbed pinky she stirs in the granules. It still doesn't taste like the sea. ...

The Barbie was my height and wearing a wedding dress 😂

I asked my kiddo what kinds of toys his classmates like and he mentioned the skibidi toilet and man, I dunno if that looks any less cursed 💀

My friend donated a box of dolls from her childhood and freaked out when she thought she saw one in the passenger seat of an Amazon delivery truck the next day (godspeed friend 🤡)

Had to Google Pamela and was gonna put it here for the jumpscare (but didn’t want to put a curse on us all 💀)

Someone gave me a my-size Barbie as a kid, and I really liked it until my brother said he saw it standing over my bed at night with a knife 💀

Always my pleasure 😂 (I was terrified by that doll story from Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark…I think it was called Harold?)

The Doll Problem - Nightmare Magazine No one knows where the doll came from. With its blue glass eyes and ribboned hair, it looks like the ones you see at department stores and wonder who the hell buys them. “It’s gonna kill us in our sle...

Excited to have a new flash story out today in @nightmare-magazine.com!

“The Doll Problem” is inspired by a strange doll that appeared on a friend’s couch one summer and the burden of always overthinking things.

Bittersweet Endings (for All Who Live to See Such Times) - Uncanny Magazine This is a story about the theatrical release of The Fellowship of the Ring, about finding hope in your despair and despair in your hope, and about the year 2001. I first read The Lord of the Rings at ...

I felt so hopeful by the end, which isn’t an easy feat these days.

The cover for Uncanny Magazine Issue 64, “Barbershops of the Floating City" by Grace P. Fong: A woman stands facing the viewer, her qipao is a light blue color with flower designs in a darker shade of blue. Her long, black hair trails elegantly behind her while she holds a pair of scissors close to her chest. Behind there is a shadow that looks in the opposite direction, as if she is looking down at the city depicted below. At the top is a sun that crowns the two figures and bathes the entire picture in light. The quote reads: "You used to be in a band. Now you cut hair. The Institute hired you because you’re the daughter of the Floating City’s Founder’s fourth mistress, the one who always cooks up trouble when she gets too hungry. You don’t like the work, but you like all the different scissors."

It placed 1st on the Uncanny Poll!

“Super Mario was based on an Italian man I saw die in an accident on a construction site. I thought to myself, ‘What if that man had been killed by a gorilla, rather than negligence?’

The Church at the Edge of Time the pastor is a woman / with small birds living in the hollows of her eyes.

Since this one’s got a lot of unexpected love the past month, here’s the poem I had the most fun writing last year:
