Edits things; WSET Diploma student (very lapsed); knitter; food and wine lover. A worrier. Also dances a bit. The Xitter account masquerading as me is probably a bot. I’m not there

16.02.2026 15:05 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0My brother wanted a London pub crawl. The result? My new Substack post: "Britain Lost 14,000 Third Places. They were Called Pubs. Is Your Local Next?" How private equity reshaped the local, which pubs are most at risk and most importantly what to do about it.

Absolutely fascinating read. Thanks for sharing.
16.02.2026 14:27 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Our local is great, but it's newest owners [not the GM or staff] seem chaotic and disinterested. I hope it survives through the next stage, for the staff and for the regulars.
And I'm very lucky, there are loads of other venues within a 15/20 min walk, but I like this place
From Caroline Mersey, if you remember her

Tigerman is a good starting point. Angelmaker is my favourite. Avoid Gnomon for a first book though.
I don't think I even got that far. The Kate Bush one was a bit of a thing in my school year at the time, but I had only the vaguest idea of the story.
Don't think a "new interpretation" would encourage me to the cinema
Not read any, but I think I know someone who has. Let me check

15.02.2026 12:21 — 👍 10 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Oh quite so. I grew up in a town with a lot of 'famous' residents. It was considered unspeakably rude to have intrusive or unnecessary interactions with them.
Had to explain Hard to a boyfriend that he couldn't accost Peter Sissons in a cookware shop in Tonbridge Wells to talk to him
Those poor kids.
I still vaguely remember being 'better' from measles - was not a nice experience
That was sort of my point. But yes, I'd love to be able to get an Irish passport - sadly marriage doesn't hack it.
14.02.2026 13:02 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Correct on the liver. Wrong on the other two - love oysters. Snails are a bit pointless but edible and a good way of getting garlic in.
No, I seriously disprefer ranch dressing of all dressings, and grits - I think it's a cultural thing
My parents let my brother name me. I was born at the end of April and he was three (3) at the end of July. I think (think) I got off lightly

13.02.2026 16:11 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I like watching some sport, but am not obsessive. But I live in a city obsessed by either it's own football team or the one from the city next door. It's fine, they seem to be having a nice time. When they win everyone is excited - sometimes enough that it filters through to me

Okay, then the complainant needs to buy a calculator, or learn to add up, or something.
But the complainant's 'point' on pricing is moot - £45 + £35 + service = somewhere around £90
13.02.2026 11:32 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Okay, then it depends how it was advertised.
I personally wouldn't want to 'share' those dishes with another diner - even one I knew intimately. But I'm guessing the menu was advertised in advance since it is specifically themed and quite unusual.
Bugger, that's at least twice now I've agreed with Morgan - not bad over the length of his career, but ...
