Mini book review of Carmilla & Laura written by SD Simper which i rated 4 stars
Book quote: “If your dear heart is wounded, my wild heart bleeds with yours.” - Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Carmilla
Book quote: "I do not know if I believe in God," Carmilla said. "Because it means he created a creature like me, only to condemn me to Hell from the start." I knew not if she referred to being a vampire or her habit of kissing women." - S.D. Simper, Carmilla and Laura
Basically the same book in a different font. Firstly, we have the Victorian gothic novella that is the earliest known work of vampire literature & explores themes of forbidden desire. The second is an emotionally intense retelling filled with sapphic tension. Both very enjoyable reads!

Mini book review of Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth which I rated 4.5 stars
Book quote: "Too late I realise that she has been the Summer of my life. What a slow and painful death this shall be." Chloe Michelle Howarth, Sunburn
Book quote: "Susannah, you are Heaven made flesh, you have been the greatest fire of my life. It's not good enough, I know, but for every time I made you feel inadequate, I have died a hundred deaths. I'll love you until the earth finishes." Chloe Michelle Howarth, Sunburn
My heart is in shambles. This is easily one of the most devastatingly beautiful pieces of literature I've ever had the pleasure of reading. A literary coming of age lesbian romance that perfectly encapsulates yearning & the immense weight of the queer experience. SO GOOD.

Mini book review of Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab which I rated 5 stars
Book quote: "Bury my bones in the midnight soil, plant them shallow and water them deep, and in my place will grow a feral rose, soft red petals hiding sharp white teeth." V.E. Schwab, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil
Book dedication: "To the ones who hunger- for love, for time, or simply to be free" V.E. Schwab, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil
So glad this book lived up to the hype. I thoroughly enjoyed it & could barely keep my eyes away. Vampires, toxic yuri, diverse characters, & a plot filled with such interesting twists & turns.
There's so much to love, I almost didn't want it to end.

mini book review of They Both Doe At The End by Adam Silvera which i rated 4 stars
book quote: "To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that's all." - Adam Silvera, They Both Die At The End
book quote: "No matter when it happens, we all have our endings. No one goes on, but what we leave behind keeps us alive for someone else." - Adam Silvera, They Both Die At The End
recently did a reread of this!
this book is a YA Igbtq+ fiction that explores a bittersweet experience with first love on the day the main characters are expected to die.
spoiler alert! just because you know what's coming, doesn't make it any less devastating.

mini book review of Thirst / La Sed by Marina Yuszczuk (translated by Heather Cleary) which i rated 4 stars
book quote: "Death was on the horizon, yes, but so was this adult life that had disappointed me in almost every possible way. Disillusionment was its hallmark, the collapse of everything I had thought impossible to undo, and the daily resignation to accept it." - Marina Yuszczuk, Thirst/La Sed
book quote: "We're all standing at death's door; someone has to be next in line." - Marina Yuszczuk, Thirst/La Sed
didn't exactly head in the direction i anticipated, but i'm not mad at it! a Latin American dark/gothic literary story of 2 women in different time periods. 1 a vampire & the other human. this book includes sapphic & horror elements that explores themes of mortality, loneliness, & yearning

mini book review of Make Room For Love by Darcy Liao which i rated 4 stars
book quote: "she was afraid to look at Isabel. It would be too much like looking at the sun." - Darcy Liao, Make Room For Love
book quote: "Maybe this was what freedom felt like. Months ago, at the start, she'd thought that freedom meant being able to cut and run. It was what she'd needed at the time. But now, finally, she felt free enough to stay-free to choose Isabel, to be with her through the good and the bad, to throw herself into the pain and joy of loving someone even if she didn't know what was on the other side." - Darcy Liao, Make Room For Love
this book was sooo! fucking! cute! pure fluff, ofc some angst. i ate this one up. butch lesbian & bi trans femme representation with an array of diverse characters & a medium paced plot. explores themes of self discovery, grief, & healing all wrapped within a slow burn romance.

The Burning Kingdoms trilogy! still working on book 3. really good so far! an emotionally charged fantasy w queer & cultural representation. world building is great, i enjoyed learning of the magic system, & the epic tale of a rebellion w a hint of sapphic romance really drew me in

mini book review of The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes which i rated 5 stars
Poem: DREAM VARIATION “To fling my arms wide In some place of the sun, To whirl and to dance Till the white day is done. Then rest at cool evening Beneath a tall tree While night comes on gently, Dark like me,— That is my dream! To fling my arms wide In the face of the sun, Dance! whirl! whirl! Till the quick day is done. Rest at pale evening.... A tall, slim tree. ... Night coming tenderly Black like me.”
Poem: POEM “The night is beautiful, So the faces of my people. The stars are beautiful, So the eyes of my people. Beautiful, also, is the sun. Beautiful, also, are the souls of my people.”
Poem: HARLEM NIGHT SONG “Come, Let us roam the night together Singing. I love you. Across The Harlem roof-tops Moon is shining. Night sky is blue. Stars are great drops Of golden dew. In the cabaret The jazz-band's playing. I love you. Come, Let us roam the night together Singing.”
just finished a quick read that i absolutely adored. i've always loved learning about the Harlem Renaissance & the boom of african american culture & creativity through the arts. after i finished it the first time, i went back & gave it a 2nd read just so i could fully appreciate it. 10/10

mini book review of The Giver by Lois Lowry which i rated 3 stars
book quote: "Memories are forever." - Lois Lowry, The Giver
book quote: "The man that I named The Giver passed along to the boy knowledge, history, memories, color, pain, laughter, love, and truth. Every time you place a book in the hands of a child, you do the same thing." - Lois Lowry, The Giver
TW: child death, injury
I first read this book back in middle school, but I felt like I should refresh my memory. YA dystopian fiction that is emotionally resonant & explores themes of self discovery, introspection, & individuality.
